Q. & A. About
Your Heart
Q I.s there any certain rcla
lionship between diet and heart
diseas(»?
A Many heahh authorities he
iieve that factors in the lutmap
diet are related to heart disease
and especially to heart attacks.
This relationship is not full>
proved, but thtne are some thing>

Q What does “cardiovascular
di.soase” mean?
A “Cardiovaseular” means
lieart and blood vessel.” There
are many cardiovascular di.seases
and heart researchers are ex
ploring vaiious means of treat
ment, cure, and prevention of
the.se diseases. More than 3'X>
thousand living North Carolin
ians are now afflicted by cardio
vascular disease and. at present
rates, more than half of all citi
zens of the state eventually will
be afflicted by this leading cause
of premature disability and
death.

sociatioin, No, 1 Heart Circle,

Q—What is rheumatic heart
disease, and how is it related to
rheumatic fever?
A—Rheumatic heart disease is
j an iiiflammalion and scarring of
the heart muscle and heart
! valves which sometimes results
I from rheumatic fever. This may
interfere with the work of the
vital “pump” that supplies the
■'lood our bodies need. Rheumatic
fever, however, does not always
damage the heart for life. Three
out of four patients recover with
little disability.

Health and Safety Tipn
from
The American Medical
Association
Does your son want to study
medicine? Or your daughter?
For the aspiiing student, a
medical career offers many op
portunities private practice, re
search, teacliing. administration,
occupational health, school or
college health, puolic health, for
eign service, or the armed forces.
Each opportunity requires differ-
e-nt talents and abilities. Four
personal traits, however, are
musts, no matter what specialty
a medical student chooses, says a
now leaflet of the American
Medical Association.
2. ^Concern for people. Concein
for people is llie dynamic or
medicine. A student must possi^hS
a coi.Tipasslon for people that m-
eludes understanding of human
needs and feais.
3. Good health. A medical ca
reel*, as well as the preparation
for it, makes strenuou.s demand.-^
upon a physician. .Student.-^ must
be equipped to withslaiul the
physical and emotional stresses
of long working hours and men
ial pressures. The profession re
quires good health.
RK-ITl
lTlt>
1. Intelleptual curiosity. A med
ical student must expect to be a
lifelong student. Modern re
search and the rapid advances of
modern medicine continually
challenge a physician’s intellec
tual curiosity. As human hori
zons stretch into space, medical
knowledge must expand accoixl-
•1. Tenacity. A medical sturUMil
must bn prepared to devote ten
years or more, with mini na! in
come, to formal education. Only
a conscientious,, tenacious slu-
denr can meet thi^ etiucational
demands with hig hscholastic a-
chievement.
"I hope youVe not hungry! Slim here cleaned us outf*
supported the Society through-:
out its 63 yeais,” McLendon said.!
“Sometimes we are asked why'
We maili our letters at Christmas !
in United Fund towns all over
the state,” McLendon continued.
"Our reply is that from the be
ginning of our affiliation with
the federated agencies, they have
recognized that they could not
meet the costs of the services
rendered by the Children’s Home
Society and it has always been
anticipated by both agencies that
we would approach our friends
this way at Christmas. Our soli
citations is entirely by mail and
no pressure is put upon anyone
to contribute unless he wishes to
do so.”
“In addition to the support
which it provides, we feel the
Christmas campaign is an im
portant part of our effort to
keep the public informed about
our work,” the president contin
ued. “This is one of the few
times during the year when we
make an effort to contact those
persons who have expressed in
terest in the Society’s work.
I should emphasize that our
mailing list is selective, rather
than broad and inclusive.”
Medical school is the first cl
many challenges in the medical
profession. “Physician” is more
than a title that one automati
cally receives after four years of
study and training. The title is
earned—by .meeting the medical
challenges in a community, by
