C .State University a’snapbean grower in Cleve land County has been having trouble controlling rust on his plants. He has been using^ sul phur dust hilt thinks he can get better results by applying a fun gicide as a spray. I talked with Prof. J. C. Wells of the Department of Plant Path ology and he recolTimends Man- zate as a spray instead of sul phur. Mnzate is a good fungi cide and is safer than sulphur. Sulphur may cause leaf damage, if applied under liigh te.-npera- ture conditions, which may re duce yields. ♦- While a dusting is very satis- 1 factory for controlling pests on many plants, I have always felt spraying, if properly done, is more effective because a .spray adheres longer to plant parts and is not as easily washed off by rains. “What can I use to control in sects and diseases attacking strawberry plants in my home garden?” Here again you liave a choice of using either a dust or a spray. I would suggest Captan for di seases and Malathion for inseef control. ^ If you are not equipped to spray your plants, L would sug gest 7.5 per cent Captan as a dust, and 4 per cent or 5 per cent Malathion. j If you arc equiptn-fl to spray, I you can use Captan, .50 per cent jwettable powder, at the rate of 1 2 lbs. per 100 gallons of water, jor two tablespons per gallon; I and Malathion 57 per cent emul- {sibiable concentrate, at tlie rate of 11-2 pints per 100 gallons of water or two teaspoons per gal lon. At least three days should elapse between the last applica tion of Malathion and the pick- ingv of the ripe fruit. , To control aphids, lace bugs, spider mites tred spiders) etc. on aaleas, spireas, pyracanthas and other similar shrubs, use Mala thion, spray or dust, as suggest ed for strawberries. This is a good time to treat your lawn for grubs, ants, and ■Japanese beetles (larva or worm stage.) Heptachlor, chlordane, and dielrdin are all effective controls for these pests. Use ac- I cording to directions on the con- j tainer. I If your lawn needs to be fed with a complete fertilizer, such as an 8-8-8, you can purchase a formulation containing one of the above named insecticides, thus acoemplishing two purposes ; when applying. I Watch out for Japanese beet- ! les in the adult (beetle) stage ' and knock them out as soon as tliey appear. Sevin is good; and ' safe. ' The .Medal of Honor is usually ■ presented by the President, act- ! ing behalf of Congress. It is , sometimes referred to as the . Congressional Medal and was i creat(>d over 100 years ago to lion ir Union soldiers in the Civil War. It has been awarded 2,194 times.
