As I write this, April 15, we iums on it. have had nearly two weeks of night temperatures close to the freezing point. Patty Berg, and her touring pros, are playing golf in Raleigh this week. She arrived at the first tee yesterday wearing an over coat and wise-cracked; “Bet’s gel going, igals, before it snows.” It was that cold, too. I don’t know what has happen ed to our weather but am blam ing it on Chick Carney, our amia ble atid efficient weatherman who was involved in a .seri,-jus au to accident about two months a- go. Peerhaps things will clear up when he gets back in rirculation. With all the adveise wt'ather, though, we can’t complain too Fill hanging baskets with ivy, (many types for selection), wan dering jew or purple lantana. Try geraniui.-rrs“ coleus, petunias and fobelia in well placed win dow boxes. Many interesting co lor combinations can also be worked out using combinations of these'plants. Tulerous begon ias make a beautiful show, plant ed alone. I shall never forget a window box of these plants I saw at a motel in the mountains several summers ago. Most color ful. 1 It only takes a little imagina- i tion to_work out many novel j ideas which you and your neigh- bors^can enjoy all summer long. Remember, too, there is a planb much. Azaleas, dogwoow, tulips > ®very purpose. Choose wisely and Japanese cherries are beau tiful. Jonquils have finished blcDming and rediuid and gold- , enbell have passed their prime ! season of bloom. Flow ers on wis teria, in many locations, were i frozen and jonquils were shred ded by hail in soine sections of Wake County. There at'e many things that | can still bedone to spruce the place up a bit. Plant annuals «)id perennials in beds or borders. Don’t forget to try Thumbelina zinnia this summei'. It is,, low growing, beautiful and is espec ially good for bedding. Also try Spun Yellow marigold. This new All-America selection is early and long flowei'ing. It grows to a height of a'.-out 12 inches,, has rich green foliage and stems of cutting length. This selection goes well with another All-Amei'ica, Amethyst verbena. Window and porch boxes, pots, urns and wooden buckets and tubs can be used in a variety of places. MOORE Charlie Hardly Ever Calls Information “When you’ve seen one phone book, you’ve seen them all.” That’s what some people say. T^nd when a new one comes out, it goes on a shelf and everybody forgets it. Nancy may use it to press a corsage. Then Uncle Harry tells his favorite jok'3^ . “It’s a dull book. Great cast of characters no plot.” Some people say you may as well joke about the directory. “Nobody needs it to look up phone num bers. Just call Information.” That’s what some people say. But not Charlie. The directory in his home is by the phone and used all the time. It’s marked, curled, worn ... and Charlie likes it that way! He outlines his customers in red and copies important ones in a little book he carries. Charlie doesn’t have time to call In formation for numbers when he can keep them handy. “Why make two calls when one will do?” Mom uses black lines to mark the directory . . . makes it easy to pick out the grocery, the cleaners, and ladies in the bridge club. Jimmy arid Judy mark the di rectory m their own special way. The arrows are Jimmy’s. Judy sprinkles stars. The rasp berry jam was added by the baby. That’s how handy Charlie’s directory is. And that’s why Charlie hardly ever calls Information. I
