June 9, 1966 Newton Games Go To Opposing Teams - mi w.. leoiOli A ruling by the state baseball commissioner todoy overruled earlier one by area commissioner Joe Phillips of Shelby and all games in- volving Newton, which this week pulled out of Area IV competition, will go into the record books os a win for the opposition. A protest was filed by the Gaston Post 23 team which de feated Newton 5-4 but the game was erased by Phillips' ruling. But now the gome goes back into the books as a win for Gastonia. Newton gets the win and Shelby losses, giving Shelby a 2-4 record instead of 2-3. Kings Mountoin was sched uled to host Newton Friday so the game will automaticcdly go into the books as a win for Kings Mountain and a forfeit by Newton. Rocky Goforth two base runners, both by walks. Smith had 2-for-2 for the win ners and Joe Corawell had a home run and three runs scored. Joe Dover had a 1-for-l plate performance and Black collected two hits in three trips. Margrace won its first outing ^f the year Tuesday, besting Spangler’s Concrete, 9-3. Darrell Whetstine gained the pitching win and Don Sessoms was tag ged with the loss. Craftspun was scheduled to play Spangler’s on Wednesday afternoon Margrace is carded to meet Craftspun (Thursday), VFW Monday and Spangler’s Tuesday.
