These younsters, ranging in age from 9 to 14, were all from low- income families.. Although they had previously liad little chance for responsibility, the children attended camp and demonstrated pride in their accomplishments at work and play. Swimming was thetr favorite activity. Winning the banner for having the clean est cabin was another highlight of the week, Patricia Huffiman, assistant home economics exten sion agent, notes. The 11 campers found new fri ends, shared experience® which were unique to them and 'became exposed to a sense of trust and responsibility. This experience at camp Betsy-Jeff Penn may be turning points in their lives, Miss Huffman believes. Nine civic or- have “something new” to wear to school, Mrs. Grace M. Cox, assistant extension Home econo mics agent, indicated. NEAT SURROUNDINGS IMPORTANT There is much to be gained by involving 4-H’ers in hooeing and making them aware of clean, neat and comfortable surrounding, reminds Mrs. M. Vivian H. Morris; holme economics extension agent, Martin County. Obena Matthe^^-son, Roberson- vdlle, is doing all she can to get her family, friends and fellow 4- H’ers interested in keeping their homes clean, inside and out. And the idea is catching on. In fact, 4-H members are competing for the honor of having ithe best kept yards and home surroundings, Mrs Morris says. ’ FOOD CONSERVATION TIPS Getting jars to seal perfectly -is a must in home canning, a- grees Mrs. Jassiephine Chamblee, HarrellsviUe, Rt. 1. She echos these tips from Mrs. Clara Y. Mot- ley, home economics extension agent, Hertford County. To make sure you have a perfect seal (1) examine jars carefully before us ing. Discard those with diips or cracks: (2) follow the manufac turer’s directions for using tops, lids or other closures; (3) do ndt re-use self-seal metal lids and rubber rings, and (4) use tongs for removing jars from canner after processing. Leave jars in upright position. Won- Plan 1 Womer hills Lea tember 12-13 at club gol Shelby will be 1 Map 229A Blk A Lots 20-32 Bertha Sutton Barnes .... 13.81 . HAVETABLES LEGS—WILL BUILD Mrs. Alfred Taylor, 'an Onslow County ihomemaker, found a table with legs that she liked. But the table did not meet her family’s needs, nor did it fit into the space available in her house. With the help of a building company, a new table top with dmp leaf sides was made and mounted on the beauti ful old table legs Mrs. Taylor re finished the table, and her “new table with old legs’’ is the envy of all her friends, says Mrs. Mil dred Ragnal, home economics extension agent. SUMMER SERVICE PROJECTS Several Swain County 4-H clubs remained active during the sum mer months and had no difficully keeping busy. Members of one club cut wood for an elderly, sick imian. Another club conducted a community clean-up campaign and a third club helped clean brush from a community ceme- tary, reports Mrs. Carolyn D. Buff, assistant home economics extension agent.
