Correct information is invaluable to a free people and for keep ing a free people free. '' ; ’. , To understand the reasons for fall coloration in the ledves, we must go to the plants'theftiselves and find out w-hat makes the color in the jfirst place. It is com plicated but perhaps we can simplify enou^ to be under- stood^ Leav-es are the manufacturing centers for plant food.arid they are green because thy oontRin chlorophyll. It is the chlorophyll which manufactures the sugars which supply the food essential for plant growth. These sugars afe manufactur- ’ed in^ the' lea^’Ps during bright' sunny days and are distributed throughout the plant by a maze of pipes and tubes, made up of many different kinds of cells. The most rapid manufacture takes place during the spring and summer months when the light intensity s greatest and the days rae longer In the early fall, the days be come shorter and night temper atures begin to dip. When this happens the sugars are not mov ed around in the plant, as they wer-e under higher temperatures and longer days, but become trap ped in the leaves and build up rapidly. This is the signal which trig gers a'slowirtg'doWn of the man ufacture of chlorophyll as it is destroyed' in the leaf faster than it is produced When this happens the leaves lose their green color and other pigments, which have been mask ed by the chlorophyll, intensify ing the leaves and accounting for the beautiful coloration in our fall foliage. stwetuv I^RESH vforttini Manigttf minutef . ldi«# wluiS'jaiM w«Brk h«e?^ NkV officer fKM Tf^'re when I get here.’' 0 *' 0 Wife (showtog hiul^d an expensive fur roaUf “One really caii^rat feel sorry for ,'flie‘ Poor thing that was sklnnea fbr ^^’nu^arid; *T afJiiWftlJBr your sympathy." /i coming to life... from SEVENTEEN magazine! *VlbSiMspap« b a awmliir «l die iKiii|^ Bureau Of Circulstlon*, a nonpi^ aDopirsttis^ tmttkikm tt pebUabafs, adewtiMn, aad Advertiilns AfanolM.
