Cole Porter Musical Hit Opened July 4 The Charlotte Summer Thea ter’s musical season opens July 4th with Cole Porter’s musical romp "Silk Stockings" which will star the popular singing duo of Earl Wrightson and Lois Hunt. “Silk Stockings” will be at Ovens Auditorium in Charlotte through Sunday, July 9. Wrightson and Hunt will be making their third consecutive appearance at the Charlotte Sum mer Theater following highly successful engagements in “Ca mclot" and Cole Porter’s “Kiss Me Kate". In these years, they have come to enjoy the Charlotte Summer Theater as much as the ater-goers enjoy them. Both veterans of Broadway and national tours (Miss Hunt most recently in the Rodgers and Ham merstein smash, "Sound of Mus ic” and Mr. Wrightson in such hits as “New Moon" — whose re cent revival had him in the star ring role), they have also scored resounding successes in stock and on tour. Perhaps best known via their notable Columbia record ings, Mr. Wrightson and Miss Hunt have scored sensationally in the LP field, their albums such as “A Night With Sigmund Rom berg”, “A Night With Jerome Kern” and the new “Kiss Me Kate" recording, selling in the hundreds of thousands. Karl was also the host and featured attraction on his own program every Sunday afternoon, “The American Musi cal Theater.” Miss Hunt has appeared at the Met on many occasions. Among the various roles she lias sung at the Met and with other leading opera companies are Mimi and Musetta in “La Boheme”, Gilda in “Rigoletto”, and Adina in "Eli sir D’lAmor". But her most notable achievement at the Met was her show stopping performance as Adele in “Die Fledermaus", which also had two performances on network television. Featured with the talented pair of Earl Wrightson and Lois Hunt will be several charming new faces for Charlotte Summer The ater audiences — Charlotte Fair child, Sid Raymond, and Charles Goff. Charlotte Fairchild comes to Charlotte with many impres sive credits; most recently, she was the standby for Angela Lans bury in “Mame". Sid Raymond is familiar for his frequent televi sion and movie appearances of all types — most memorable as the Schlitz bartender. The incomparable Cole Porter has furnished the witty words and sprightly music for "Silk Stockings”, for which George S. Kaufman, Leueen Mac Grath and Abe Burrows have supplied the book, based loosely on Greta Gar bo’s famed movie "Ninotchka”. Focal point of the frantic fun in "Silk Stockings” is the Russian Commissar Ninotchka’s attempt to resist the temptations of Paris while valiantly carrying out a political mission. Though “Silk Stockings” is a devastating spoof of the grim attitudes toward fun and pleasure held by residents behind the Iron Curtain, it is more than just a burlesque of Kremlin customs and manners— it is a jolly entertainment in its own right. “Too Bad”, "Paris Loves Lov ers”, “Without Love”, and the title song "Silk Stockings” are among the hits from this show made timely by the visit of So viet Premier Kosygin to the United States. Tickets for all performances are available at the Charlotte Summer Theater box-office in Ovens Auditorium, seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Res ervations are also available by calling 376-4821 in Charlotte or writing to the Charlotte Summer Theater, Ovens Auditorium, Char lotte, N. C. The United States steel indus try produced 134 million tons of raw steel in 1966, about 26 per cent of the worl dproduction, es timated at 520 million tons. In 1950 this country’s share of world steel production was 47 per cent. The world’s major steel pro ducing countries in order of rank are the United Stales, Russia, Japan, Germany, England, France and Canada. Telephone Talk By R. B. MOORE INFORMATION ON INFORMATION .. She'll give you prompt and efficient service if you need a new number that isn’t in the directory yet, or if for some reason you don’t have a directory available. But on most of your everyday calls, you can get your number just as fast by looking it up yourself — especially when you keep your own personal list of frequently called numbers (including fire and police departments and your doctor, of course). There’s no faster way to find a phone number! * * * SAFETY DRIVING IS SERIOUS BUSINESS. One of the most essential parts of a vehicle is the brakes. Drivers should be instructed to perform simple safety brake tests to prevent accidents. The following tests should be made each morning before the vehicle is moved: 1. Press the brake pedal with a light gradual pressure. If the pedal travels or fades to the floor, the brakes are not properly adjusted or the master cylinder is not functioning properly. 2. Apply pressure on the brake pedal two or three times to build up fluid pressure in the system. On the third stroke continue to ap ply good firm pressure in excess of normal braking and hold for about five seconds. If the pedal gradually fades toward the floor, do not drive the vehicle. Have it checked by mlitUs mechanic. Remember, the safest time for a brake failure to occur is when the vehiqie is standing. * Ruff Arrives At Vietnam Post Builder Third Class Charles R.
