Twenty-one 4-H’ers in Randolph County found out recently when they attended a crafts workshop conducted by Mrs. Doris C. Lath am of the Gray’s Chapel com munity. A whimmy diddle is an old fashioned wooden toy consisting of a notched stick with a small propeller attached to one end. Mrs. Joyce Spoon, assistant home economics agent, explains that when the notches are vigorously rubbed by another stick the vib rations cause the propeller to re volve. In addition to making whimmy diddles, the 4-H’ers learned to make papier-mache jewelry, a felt toy and greeting cards. REMODEL 100-YEAR-OLD HOUSE Mr. and Mrs. Preston Tilley, Bahama, Durham County, have been remodeling their 100-year old farm house. And, in order to stretch the family’s housing dol lar they’ve done a lot of the work themselves. Take the living room, for ex ample. To begin the work, Tilley removed a partition between the room and hall and reinforced the ceiling with a steel beam. Mrs. Tilley put up the ceiling tile. To complete the improvements, Tilley put down new plywood noormg, wnlch was covered with| nylon carpeting Mrs. Tilley an-i tiqued a beautiful chest; An nette, a daughter, refinished and upholstered a chair; Bucky, a son, built a bookcase, and Mrs. Tilley painted pictures for the room. “This has truly been a family project,” agrees Martha B. Edmondson, extension home economics agent. SEES MERIT IN SPENDING PLAN Poor money management can cause much frustration and many headaches, agrees a young Goldsboro mother. For the woman, who works part-time and receives some pub lic assistance, discovered it was impossible to make ends meet without careful planning. According to Betty Jean Barr, associate home economics exten sion aigent, Wayne County, ‘‘the homemaker had borrowed large sums of money from several fi nance companies, purchased many items of furniture on the installment plan and spent more money than necessary for other items she thought she and her family netted.” ^ When the businesses started collecting, the young woman found she was in "tiouble.” She called on Miss Barr to help her work out a realistic budget. “She's now a firm be liever in a spending plan and realizes that the time and ef forts spent in making one can soothe plenty of frustrations,’ 1 Miss Barr adds. UNUSUAL ATTENDANCE RECORD Mrs. Bobby Owen Becker, Ro wan County, has an unusual at tendance record. The 18-year-old homemaker has nine years of perfect attendance at the Frank lin Extension Homemakers Club. Mrs. Beeker started coming to meetings with her mother when she was nine, and has partici pated faithfully in the club’s pro jects, Edith Hinshaw, home eco nomics extension agent, reports. "For example,” she says, “one year Bobby read and reported on enough books to receive a read ing certificate.” Two campuses of the Univer sity of North Carolina—North Carolina State University at Ral eigh and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are among the 41 member institu tions of the Oak Ridge Associat ed Universities, Inc., a non-profit educational and research corpor ation located in Oak Ridge, Ten nessee. The corporation was es tablished in 1946 and operated for nearly 20 years as the Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Stud ies. i i >iii li liil mm liln Having A Wedding?
