One way is by decorating gourds for ornamental baskets, charm strings and musical in struments. According to Donald Dunlap, assistant extension agricultural agent, Watauga County, “The procedure to follow for prepar ing gourds is first to clean and polish the outer surface, whether by scrubbing with steel wool or a very fine grade of sand paper. Then, wipe with a soft cloth. Al low to dry thoroughly. Next, trace the design on the polished gourd. The design may be burn ed into the surface of the gourd with an electric needle or cut ,with a very sharp carving tool. “After the design is completed, apply a high grade, transparent furniture wax,” he advises. DONATED MIX A Scotland County milling company cooperated with adult and youth groups in promoting a Better Breakfast program. It donated sample packages of pancake mix to each program participant, reports Brenda J. Beam, assistant home economics extension agent. HOMEMAKER SUPPORTS USO “There is no end to what a person can do if the interest is high and he remembers the sac rifices being made by our service men,” believes Mrs. Chase C. Padgett, extension home econo mics agent, Onslow County. One such person is Mrs. Ira Paul, a member of the Starlight Extension Homemakers Club. Mrs. Paul encouraged local club members to prepare a coun ty fair educational booth on “the ways homemakers can help the USO,” Mrs. Padgett says. Mrs. Paul also assists other courtly organizations in serving cakes to servicemen at the cen ter'. Last spring she took on a private project-making perma nent flower arrangements for the entire center. "This fall," Mrs. Padgett ob serves, “Mrs. Paul Is urging Gar den Clubs and Homemakers groups to make and donate fall flower arrangements to the club center,” STUDY THE ATTIC A study of what’s in the attic or other storage areas could solve many house furnishings needs if homemakers would take time and browse through storage plac es. "For many items stored away and described as being ugly or untidy could be given a face lifting and be put back into use again,” points out Annie M. Tuck, extension home economics agent, Person County. Mrs. Odell Villines, Hurdle Mills, Rl. 2, took this advice. The result: A lovely bedroom at low cost. For about $50, Mrs. Villines repaired and refinished a bed, chest, rocking chair and a bat* tery radio. Whifener To Speak To Alumni Group Congressman Basil L. Whlto nor of Gastonia, N.
