This can be changed slightly to, "lime is money”, without reducing its truthfulness one bit, says H. W. Dameron, county Extension chair man. It is not uncommon to hear of lime applications on acid soils resulting in a 400 or 500 per cent return on investment—or more A good liming program is the very foundation of any good fer tility and farming program. The proper soil pH must be maintain ed if full benefit from fertilizer is to be realized and for top yields and profits. In spite of the importance of a good liming program, it is oft en overlooked. The latest soil test summary being prepared by the N. C. Department of Agri culture’s Soil Testing Division shows that of all the soil sam ples tested during the past two years, 57 pef cent of them show AREA STUDENTS WIK MUSIC AWARDS — Sixty-nine Appalachian State University students, among them Michael Greene, at far right, of Kings Mountain, have won special talent awards consisting of scholarships totaling 111.550 for their proficiency in music. Greene, a freshman, son of Mr. Mrs. Oscar Greene, is among 55 members of ASU's marching band who won awards ' chosen on the basis of auditions which were open to all ASU students. Mike Lynn of Lowell, left Mike O'Dell of Dallas, and Greene each will receive a S150 cash award during the current school year. ed a need for lime. Of those need ing lime, over half needd a ton per acre or more to raise the soil pH to an optimum level. Soils needing this much lime are very likoly acid enough for soil acidity to be greatly limiting crop production. A word of caution is due, though, against the indiscriminate use of lime, reminds Mr. Damer on. Too much lime can be just as bad as too little. The only ac curate way to determine if lime is needed, and how much, is to have your soil tested. The amount of lime needed will depend on the present acidity level of the soil, the type of soil and the crop to be grown. These factor* »ra 3|. F. V.
