I Thursilay, 3ufy 18, 1^68 KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD. KINGS MOUNTAIN. N. C. Fag# \i -royot/ fiePOKTS "*™*eT. NOtIN U»Oi»4* HOUSING ACT OF 1968 histrry wlicrr housing legislation The House of Representatives was itivolved. The bill has been has been engaged in one of 'hi relerred t t as another "Christmas .'nost protracted debates in its tree", situe it covers so many areas of interest. Many features of this proposal are real troublesome. The new departure whereby the govern ment would pay a portion of the interest on home mortgages for qualifying citizens was one as pect of the bill which brought considerable concern to many of us. Provision for government griints to cover costs of police pro tection and garbage collection “and similar services” in blight ed areas and certain types of sub divisions, also caused a lot ofi head shaking. | Adequate housing for a grow ing population is essential. The encouragement of home ownership is vital to the continuation of our system of government. How ever, in our zeal to accomplish these worthwhile purposes we must nut lose sight of the equally important goal of preserving our free enterprise system. THE PUEBLO INCIDENT This week interested parties and parents of‘members of the| Navy crew captured by the North Koreans when the USS Pueblo' was taken visited the Department of State to demand action. They insisted that positive demands be made upon North Korea for the return of the men to be followed by affirmative action if the de mand was not properly acted up on. Too much time has elapsed since the taking of these Ameri can sailors. Our government 3 DAT SALE 4#^«APPLIANCES! Sterchi's Carload Buying Saves You More! 14 CU. Terrific buy from Sterchi’sl should hoed the request of those of us who insist that the men be returned safely It the North Ko- reann arc to escape retaliation by' the United States. The act com-1 mitted by this Communist gov ernment is in direct conflict with 'vernatirnal law and custom. Even If our ship was in the terri torial waters of North Korea — which our government denies there was no basis under inter national law for the act of piracy committed against the ship and her crew. American service men arc en titled to a greater degree of con cern by their gevernment for their ■afety. It is now time that the Pueblo crow be returned to United State.s control! VIOLENCE IN WASHINGTON A few days ago one Washing- \ ton police officer was slain and another critically injured when two robbers took the gun of one of the officers ^and brutally shot him and his fellow officer. Last weekend an organization known as the Black United Front adopt ed a resolution calling the killing "a justifiable homicide". The res- oluticn contained other inflam- matorv statements evidencing a hostility toward law enforcement officers. Singularly, among the member ship of this organization is one Reverend Waliei E. Fauntroy and one Reverend Chaning Phillips. The former is Vice-Chairman ofi the City Council of Washington, j and the other is National Com-! mitteeman of his political party, i Neither has repudiated the reso lution, even though Fauntroy does contend that he was not present at the meeting , when the action was taken. The Policemen’s Association of the District of Columbia has prop erly called for Fauntroy's resig nation. In a statement before the House I inserted the demand of the Police Association In the Con-1 gressional Record saying: "Thei Policemen's Association . . . has set the issue in proper perspec-l live . . . and expresses the leel-. ings of the vast majority of law-' abiding citizens in the District of Columbia and the ’nation.” My statement furthpr averred: "Fauntroy’s position' as Vice- Chairman of the City Council of the Nation’s Capital is incompati ble with membership in an or ganization which justifies mur der. He should disassociate him self from the violent resolution adopted by the Black United Front, or he should resign from the Washington City Council.” IN RALEIGH W. C. BalleW of .Mauney- Ballcw, Inc. attended a short course in knitting' teehnology at North Carolina State Univer sity July 8-12. The course was presented to 32 supervisors from the textile industry who are directly concerned with knitting.
