Rioyhill In Shelby Representative James T. Broy- hill visited Cleveland County Tuesday., He visited local indus tries and talked to the residents of Cleveland County throughout the day. A coffee was given at the home of Mrs. Ronald Relger of Shelby, followed by a cake parly at 3:30 In the home of Mrs. George Bry ant, also of Shelby. Congressman Broyhill spoke at the eivltan Club meeting at 12:15. He commented on the prin cipal differences in this congress and the preceding congress. The following is a copy of his speech at that meeting. ‘The difference In the moods of the two Congresses clearly comes , from popular demands thae we stop the headlong rush into vast new' spending and the greater 'management of the lives of the American people by the bureauo- eracy in Washington. ; Actually, a good deal moi c than a restraining hand from the people, is being felt in Washing ton. TTiere is a strong undercui - rent of- frustration, resentment, and even anger In America today. The Old formulas that call for the federal government to assume all obligaticns and leave every thing to Washington is not work- ^ ing. V Th^ people too are increasingly dcstressed by the assertion of power by the Supreme Court and it is likely that we arc entering a national dialogue now that will reassess the authority of the court. No matter what else may be said about the nomination of Mr. K.ortas as the new Chief Justice of Ihe Court,' the American peo ple understand that the real argument revolves around the philosophy of Mr. Aortas. Vefy frankly, I feel that ap pointments of this kind must he viewed differently than those, lei us say, for the President’s cabinet. Within reason, I feel, that presi dents should be allowed to choose top administrators who will carry out their programs while they are in the presidency. However, 'Supreme Court and other judicial appointments with tljeir lifetime tenure of office is something else. Although the House of Repre sentatives will not have any authority in confirming or rc- tccting the nomination of Mr. Sortas. I feel the Senate should have a full debate about his ap pointment. This will provide a full dress debate about the Su preme Court itself. Although what is said In this discussion may bo drown^ out by the noise of the presidential campaign, thp mgiie deserves .careful attention. There is no doubt that the deci sion of the Senate will have a great influence on the direction of the country for years to come." Wednesday, the congressman was honored at a cake party in the home of Mrs. Harold Hern don, visited the residents of Boil ing . Springs, and aetended a brecinct meeting in Patterson Springs. Census Survey On Smoking Census Bureau interviewers will conduct a survey here concerning the- smoking habits of the popu lation during the week of August 19, Director Joseph R. Norwood of the Censas Regional Office in Charlotte announced. Interview ers will ask about people's past smoking habits as well as present habits in' ordfer to discover wheth er. tfiere have been significant changes over the past year. Interviews conducted locally are part of the third annual survey of smoking habits taken among a representative sample of the na tion's population to provide statis tical data for the U. S. Public Health Service. The quc.stions on smoking wilf^ be asked during the Bureau's monthly labor force inquiries. .Questions about Jobs are designed to provide data for use by the U. S. Department of Labor in de termining current national em ployment and unemployment trends. - The identity of households in the survey throughout the U. S. is confidential, and the informa tion obtained will be used only for statistical purposes. Interviewers who will visit households in this area between August 19 and 24 are; Mr.s. Ethel S. Rockett, 908 South Street, Gas tonia, and Mrs. Jacqueline H. Go forth, 1301 Montrose Drive, Shel- by.
