But Dr. David Caldwell and liis wife. Rachel were eternally grateful for the rumor spread by Rachel's sister, Mary Dunlap. Dr. Caldwell was truly an all-around man. From 1768 to 1824. he served as minister to two congregations in the Cireensboro area. He was also a scif-taiiglit iloetor of medivine, an educator and an outspoltcn critic of British tyranny. In fact, he was so iniluential, he was forced to spend almost the entire revolution in hiding. One day lie returned to Itis honic anil wtis scizctl by the enemy. It was a great moment for the British, but only a nioment. The ne.xt move was a mistake, I hey decided to ransack liis home before taking him back to their camp. Leaving iiim with a guard. tlic> set about their destructive work. Mary, who happened to he with the Caldwells at the time, saw this as an opportunity and gambled. She approached Dr. Caldwell and whispered, just loud enough for the guard to hear, “Shouldn't Gillespie be coming?" Ciillcspic was the leader of a small but cfTcctive army of patriots. And he was nowhere in the area. But tlie guard didn't know that. So, fearing that lie and his men were about to be attacked, he warned the officer- T^mor. in-charge. The officer rounded up his men and hurried away, leaving Dr. Caldwell and his wife in peace. U is difficult to measure fully Dr. Caldwell's 'nJucnce on the people of his time. But we uo know that five-state gover nors, fifty ministers and many physicians, lawyers and judges received their classical edu cations in his little school. Had Dr. Caldwell been taken away that day, he might never have continued his work. But thanks to the imagination and iii- gcnuily of Mary Dunlap, he carried oh. Mrs. Dunlap's rumor happened almost 200 years ago. But the imagination and ingenuity it demonstrates continues toilay. .At Duke Power, imagination and ingenuity have always been a part of our philosophy. When Duke Power was founded in i 904. the company's concept of turning thr entire Catawba Kiver N'allcy into a hydroelectric system was an innovation. For the I970's we're putting imagination to work in building one of the world's largest nuclear generating stations at Otcnce, South Carolina. And our philosophy will continue to work for the peO|)le of the Piedmont as long as we serve this area. Duke Power Working for the Piedmont kunfwwffii n the.spirit that made it great. If you have a "pet" mixture, which Is giving satisfactory results, I would not have you change. Perhaps many more house plants suffer from an excess of fertilizer rather than a lack of it. Symptoms of over-fertilization, may be expressed by the plant in| a slowing down of growth, stunt-, ing, browned leaf margins and wilting, depending upon the do-, gree of excess. Plants may even! be killed by excess applications,' especially if the material used Is high in available nitrogen. 1 If the plants do not receive; enough fertilizer, the leaves may turn a pale yellow, may drop,' few flowers may form and the stems may be shrrtened. 1 If a good potting mixture is used at planting time, most house plapts fill not need additional fertilizer until about three months after potting. Plants that have become well established may need small amounts of fertilizer about every six weeks. Do not fertilize plants when they are resting or dormant. Probably the better method of applying fertilizer Is in liquid form. Soluble fertilizers are a- available and should be used ac cording to the manufacturer’s in struction because they will var> in formulation and in contentra- tlon. Robert Lee White .... When applying plant nutri ents In liciukl form, or in suspend ed solution, use enough of the so lution to thoroughly wet the en tire soil mass in the oontainer. . Acid-loving plants, such as aza leas, will develop chlorosis if the soil is too alkaline (sweet). This Is expressed by a mottling of the leaves, especially between the Chlorosis may be quickly cor- leaf veins and along the midrib, reeled by spraying the foliage with a chelated iron compound or adding this material to the soil. However, to permanently correct chlorosis, it will be necessary to make the soil more acid (pH 5.5) by adding iron sulfate to the soil. TfSWTraCiTASiTrSir PAYING FOR INSURANCE?
