Good plan ning weather for spring opera tions though. There are some chores for this mohlh, too. If you have bearing straw berry plants they should be fer tilize this monlh in eastern Car olina and the lower Piedmont; and in March in the upirer Pied mont and mountain countries. Apply about two (|uarts of an 8-S- 8 fertilizer per 100 feet of row. Select a good day when the leaves are dry. DLslribute the fertilizer evenly over the plants and brush from the leaves to prevent burn- ing. Remember to muten the plants to keep the berries clean when ripening. Pine straw is probably best but clean grain straw may be used. Pertilize before apply ing the mulch. It would lu> a good idea to fer-. tilize those pecan trees you have b(?<>n ndglecting. Use about two; pounds of an 8-8-S mixture per year of age until the trees come into bearing. On bearing tret'S, apply three pounds per inch of tree diameter. j The fertilizer may he broad-' cast e\enly around the tree or It may he plated In holes 12-M inches deep made with a crowbar or an old car axle. The latter method is best (and is recom mended i because it places the plant food nearer the feeder root zone. The major portion of the feed er root system extends just in side and outside the spread (or drip) of the branches of the tree. Stagger the holes in this area unJ.ormly around the tree and divide your fertilizer according ly when placing in the hole.s. On bunch grapevines, apply one- half pound of an Sdt-S per year of age until the plants are re ceiving about three pounds p<‘r vino per year. For Muscadine vines, apply one-half pound of an 8-.S-K mix ture per year of age until the vines are receiving about six pounds of fei liliz(‘r per vine per year. Check the hou.se plants. Some may need repotting or a good spraying to control insects. If you w-ant to add some color in the house many spring flowering shrubs can be brought in and forced into bloom - flowering quince, winter jasmine, ptus-sywil- low and peach.
