Mulches! ’There are- so many materials used for this purpose. What do they accom plish? Which is best? Perhaps we should say in the beginning that mulches serve a useful purpose and their extens ive use is a good piactice in ‘he flower, vegetable and fruit gar dens. We might divide mulches into organic and inorganic kinds. ’The inorganics, of course, do not add to the organic content of the soil black polyethylene plas tic, aluminum foil and heavy mulching paper. On 'he other hand, the organic mulches are almost too numer ous to mention leaves, pine needles, peanut hulls, sawdust and shavings. All of the.se ma- tei'ials eventually decompose and fuse with the soil, some faster than o'hers. The Inorganic mulches seem to be most extensively used in the commercial production of such crops as stralwberries. This op eration is mechanized and can be very quickly done. It is rather difficult to say which of the or ganic mulching ma'crials are best but we might give some thought to what a mulch is sup posed to accomplish. Perhaps the two most import ant Ix'nefi's would be the conser vation of moisture and the reg ulation of soil temperature as both water anfl temperature fig ure strongly in the *.otal environ ment of plants. , To conserve moisture, a mulch should be porous enough to let water through and deep enough to prevent rapid surface evapor ation. An example would 'be pine needles or grain straw. Bo'h of these materials decompose ratlier rapidly and become inc-' poratod in the soil as organic matter, provid(xl the nitrogen needs are supplied for both the plant and he microorganisms which de compose the mulch. On the other hand, a mulch composed of a tough woody fiber, such as shavings, would decom pose very slowly and the nitro gen requirements would have lo be more closely watched.
