THE NATIONAL SAFETY COUNCIL VACA
TION HINTS:
Get your car in tip-top shape. Check tires and
brakes, lights and wipers, steering system.
Pack only rhe props you’ll need. Luggage piled
high in the back seat is a scene stealer and can
block visibility to the rear. If necessary, use a
luggage carrier.
Don’t forget flashlight, flares, first-aid kit—
and pack ’em so you can get to them in a hurry.
Plan your itinerary for rea.sonable mileage in
one day. It’s a good idea to phone ahead for
overnight bookings so you don’t keep pounding
the road looking for a "vacancy" sign.
TO BECOME A TELEPHONE POLE, a tree hw
to be something special. If it looks promising, it’s
checked for height, slight taper,^rability, health,
and posture. And, for the
tree that can pass this
exacting physical exami
nation, that's only the be
ginning. After cutting and
trimming, it's washed,
shaved, bored for climb
ing steps, cut to the prop
er length, inspected and
seasoned in the sun. Then
preservative is added,
and it's dried and checked
again. A tree that has
gone through all this is
good for about a half-
century of service as a telephone pole. Which is a
pretty impressive career, any way you look at it.
A LADY HAD BROUGHT her three small children
into one of our Business Offices. After they left, the
service representative found that one of the children
had left a doll behind. Realizing how the child would
feel, the service rep had an idea. She placed the doU
right in the middle of a phone display in the office
window. Sure enough, the little group retraced its
steps, saw the doll sitting in the window, and came
in for the joyful reunion.
