Oily nose drops should be
avoided. If the oil is in
haled into the lungs while
sniffing, it can form a "pock
et" in the lung tissue. There
is no way for the lung to
rid itself of the oily coating
' and so degeneration of the
area sets in — surgery may
finally be the only remedy.
Aqueous (water soluble)
nose drops avoid this risk
and are preferred.

They ar(‘ offc'ring services in
the treatment of diseases such as
emphysema, chronic bronchilLs,
asthma and the like. This is be-
in). done because of the alarming
rate of increase in these disea.set
of the past severa] years.
Dr. W. 11. Gentry, medical di
rector of the stale sanatoriuir
system, recently outlined .service:
available for the detection anc |
treatmeni ot chronic respiratorj
diseases. Dr. Gentry points out
that the care Is provided in the
sanatoriums for those patients is
another tool available to the in
dividual physician in helping i>a-.
lients to get the benefit of titel
most up-to-date treatment facili-j
ties.
Dr. Gentry says that the hfxspi-
tals of the state sanatorium -sys
tem are authorized to provide an
[admission diagnosis and exalua-
[ tion woi kup as a routine part of
all hospital admissions. .Special
diagnostic procialures arc done
when the need is indicated. ;
Treatment procedures available
for all forms of tuberculosis and
other respiratory di.sea.se include
all drugs and surgical treatment,
inhalation theiapy, physical ther
apy, expert nursing care, and
such special supportive services
as occupational therapy, social
service, vocational rehabilitation
public education for children and
some types of adult education.
.Much of tlie service tendered
by the sanatoriums is provided to
individuals referred by physicians
from rural areas and small towns
where facilities for providing this
scope of diagnostic and treatment
.service may b<* limited. Others are
referred through local health de
partments and local chif-t clinics.
According to Dr. Gentry, the
average stay of per.sons having
chronic respiratory disease is on
ly a f«w weeks, during which
I time they get a thorough diag-
! nostic workup and are placed on
I a treatment regimen desp.ned to
I provide them with the maxinrum
relief for their problem. They are
returned to their physician with
j a medical summary including
I recommendations for continuing
I treatmeni at home. Patient edu
cation is sires.scd during the slay
at the sanatorium in order to give
the person some insight into his
breathing problem.
