RALEIGH — Rapidly rising food
prices have been sending home
makers home from their market
ing sighing more often than not.
But there is some hope for r<'-
lief .seen in the production and
consumption forecast through
mid-197P’s, says Mrs. Ruby Uzzlc,
extension consumer marketing
pcnnomist. North Carolina .Slate
University. v
Food prices were up about 5
levels, liut for, 1970, the price in-
levels, but f(irl970, the price in
crease is expected to be only a-
hout ,3 percent over the entire
year.
What’s the re;>.son for the slow
down? Mostly it’s the slackening
in demand for food as well .as
larger supplies. Consumers spent
a .smaller than normal percent
age of their income gams for:
food during 1969. Retail fftod j
sales during the year were up d!
to 4'a percent with most of fhe|
sale gains due to higher prices
rather than increased .sales. ■
On a commodity basis, there
will be little change in the price;
of beef and pork from now until'
spring. Coffee prires have been ;
going up at the wholesale level
and there will be retail boosts;
soon.
Prices of dairy products, cereal,
bakery products, sugars and
.sweets will continue rheir slow, I
upward trend. ., :
It’s only in the larger supplies
of fresh fruits, potatoes, chicken i
and processed fruits and vegeta-'
hies that steady or lower j)rice.s'
are forecast, Mrs. Uzzle says.
Detailed information on varie
ties of fall harvested croirs for
1969 is now aavilable to Tar Hi'cl
farmers.
The information is contained in :
the Research Report No. .3.3, a
summary of the university’s Of- i
ficini Variety Te.sling Program. !
Dr. John C. Rice, head of the!
V'ariety Te.sting Program, .said the
report contains information on ,
all fall harvested crops. Included:
are corn hybrids, grain .sorghum, j
corn and .sorghum .silage, and
soybeans and cotton.
The information on tobacco va- ,
rieties for 1969 was released car- :
Her In Research Report No. .32. j
"Selecting the proper variety of
.seed is becoming more important'
e.aoh year,” Dr. Rice remarked.
"Information avaiiable in fhe.se
publications should be extreme- '
ly valuable in making decisions
on what variety may be best in j
a particular area.” ‘
All varieties of seed sold for
fall harvested crops in North
Carolina were compared on the
basis of yield, agronomic charac- ,
teristfes, and quality at over 60
locations. Thc.se locations include !
btith private farms and ro.searrh [
.stations. |
Copies of both Research Report
No. .32 (tobacco) and No. .33 (fall ,
harvested crops) have been sent i
to extension agents, agricultural
teachers, and other agricultural
workers in North Carolina. A
few copies are .slill available
