SUMMER CLEARANCE SALE Is Continuing AT AMOS & SONS All Our Summer Merchandise New Reduced Up To >A PRICE AMOS & SONS North Piedmont Avenue If your gardenia plants did not bloom well this sumnaer, you can blame it on the extremely low temperatures last winter. Some plants were toadly damag ed, others almost killed. If they made it through the summer, we can hope for better luck next year. I have been closely observing four nice plants at la friend’s home. One was so badly cam- aged that we cut it back severe ly. Thro? others, better protect ed, fared better but only produc ed four or five blossoms. The one we ’pr..;'ned severely has come out real well. If you would like to try "gib- bing’’ some camellia buds, now is a good time to start. ,By treat ing 'a few flower bu'-S every 10 days to two weeks, the opening of the flowers will ibe hastened. I womd wait a •while before treating the earliest varieties. You can get larger blossoms on camellias by disbudding; much the same as for chrysanthe mum and roses The leaf (vege tative) 'buds 'are smaller than the flower buds ami more pointed. The 'flower buds are lancer and more rounded. In some varieties, the flower buds arc- inclined to cluster. In this ease, remove the sm'aller I buds. Disb.dding is only Cisira- : ble for the production of large j flowers. If you •want a profusion I of bloom, disbudding is not nee- i essary. ! Now Is a good time to check ' your yard for needed improve ments — bad spots in the lawn, shrubs that have outgrown their locations, new plantings that 'are needed — to name a few. You might also, look around the com munity and become involved in a beautification project — I school, church, 'business, road- j side p arks, or recreation area. t f I Take especially god care of I your roses if you want good flo- I wers to exhibit at your local 'lair Or garden show. Disibd for lar ger flowers 'and keep the spray er 'busy in the constant fight a- gainst insects and diseases. Im- •perfect leaves 'will net put you out of competition. Clean out the vegetable and flower gardens as plants mature and become unproductive — fa- 'ied annuals and old tomato, bean and com plants. They are unsightly and may be harboring disease end insect pests. America, your new cars are ready! The 1971 Fords. New Ford Rnto Priced and sized like little imports, but roomier inside.
