A—‘Yes. For tax purposes, a fos ter child is now treated the same as a natural or adopted child. This means that you arc entitl ed to claim a $625 dependency exemption for your foster child if; (1) you furnished over half of 'his total supjxrrt, (2) he made less than $625 (this income lim itation does not ajpply if he was under 19 years of age at year end or was a full-time s'fuucnt during five months of 'the year), (3) he is a U. S. citizen or resi dent, or a resident of Canada, Mexico, the Panama Canal Zone or 'the Republic of Panama for some 'part of the year, and (4) he has not filed a joint return with his spouse. A—You can exclude from in come amounts you rtveeived un der a wage continuation plan for periods you were absent from work 'because of sickness or in jury subject to certain limitations. Form 2440 explains these limita tions and shows you ‘how to com pute your sick pay exelu-sion. The form can be obtained from your local IRS office. Q—My wife and I are filing separate returns. Can I itemize while she 'takes the standard de duction? A—JIo. On separate returns, each must use the same method of handling dcdifctiorvs. If one of you itemizes, then both must itemize deductions. A—You can deduct the excess of wha/t you paid over the fair value of any goods or services re ceived. If the regular price of the movie would have been $2, you have made a contribution of $8 ($10 minus $2). The $8 is dedud- ible as a charatable contribution.
