Shelby, chief of the defeotive di
vision of the Shelby City Police
Department, d-ied at 10:15 Tue.s-
day in Cleveland .Memorial hos
pital.
Son of the late C. Mills Howell
and .Maggie Russ Howell, he had
been in declining health for nine
months and seriously ill three
weeks.
Lt. Howell was second in com
mand at the Shelby Police De
partment w'liere he had serveri on
tile forc(> for 23 years. Prior to
Joining the city police department
he had been chief of police in
Lawndale and was with the
Cleveland County Sheriff’s De
partment five years.
Survivors include'"'hi.s widow,
Mrs. Bell Cook Howell, and two
sisters, Mrs. Sa)m Lovelace and
Mrs. Bynum Cook, both of Kings
Mountain.
Funeral services will bo con
ducted from Lutz-Austell Funeral
chapel at 2 p.rn. Thur.sriay with
the Rev. Tommy Taylor and the
Rev, Wil.soii Padgett officialing.
Burial will be in Sunset Ceme
tery.
