C. and receiv-' ed the "Scholastic A- ward." She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Sty- ers of Kings Mountain and resides with her family in Blacksburg, S. C. The "Scholastic Award" is the top honor awarded a graduating senior. r ^ ^ u. )k CANSLER-LONDON ENGAGEMENT Karen Elizabeth Cansler and Henry Adolphus Lon don, II plan a family wedding at noon August 17 in Clemmons, N. C. Presbyterian church. Their engagement has been announced by her mother, Mrs. Samuel W. Thrasher of Winston Salem. The bride-elect also is the daughter of the late Grady G. Cansler of Kings Mountain. The prospective bride groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Bryan London of Charlotte. The bride-to-be is a graduate of Winston Salem's James A. Gray Senior High and the University of North Carolina, where she also received a master's degree in special education in 1970. She is a teacher in the Pre school Project for Developmentally Handicapped Chil dren at the Frank Porter Gra'ham Research Buildinq in Chapel Hill. The bridegroom-to-be is a graduate of Charlotte Country Day School and will graduate in August from UNC, where he is in the department of radio, television and motion picturds. (Buddy) Mayes of Wilkesboro announce the arrival of their first child, a son, Sean Galloway Mayes, Thursday, June 8th, Forsyth County hospital, Winston-Salem. The baby weighed six pounds, nine ounces. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. H. Carl Mayes of Kings Mountain and Mrs. Blanche Landreth of North Wilkesboro. NEWCOMERS Mr. and Mrs. Michael Scott Powers and daughter, Lisa Anne, have moved here from Boone and are re siding at 21 I West Mountain street. Mr. Powers is the grandson of Mrs. W. K. Lisa and her parents, JAtB her brothers, Rob and ,1 Kenny and her sister, Kelly, along with Mr. and Mrs. Earl Crist of Silver Springs shared a birthday dinner and .cake with all the trimmings. Lisa's cake was pink and white and decorated with pink roses. The Spencers visited Mr. and Mrs. Wes Riddle, grandparents of Lisa, at Pompano Beach, Fla. later in the week where Lisa celebrated her birthday again with cake and gifts. Other grandparents are Mrs. Bertie Hartsoe of Kings Mountain, R. W. Spencer of Virginia Beach, Va. and great-grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Is Honored ' Mrs. Yates Ellis Spake honor ed her grand-niece, Miss Mary Jo Hord, with a tea at her home on Riverside Drive in Morgan- ton from 4 until 5:30 on Satur day, May 27.
