The change in leaf color fixjm gn*en to the man-y hues of rod, I yellow and orange is an interest- 'ing story. During the growing ; season, the leaves are gieen (chlorophyll) and engaged in life on the reen eaf because the leaf is the I source of food and fiber to sup- ' port our daily lives and that of our animals..flowers, fruits, I vegetables, grains, grasses, seeds, Wood, gum, resins and many other ] plant products. leaves are of e- I normous importance to us, quite I apart from their b(*auly or di- Ijversity of coloring. In the summer, when they are 11 green and mar/afacturing plant I food, we are not conscious of the I j many other colors (pigments) j that are also present in the leaf. * In the fall when the days become ' shoider and the temperature coo- ■ lei’, the manufacturing processes I slow down an dthe production of ■ chlorophyll is reduced. This con- , tinues until the gi'cen color dis- I j appears and the other colors, I j which give us so much beauty [land pleasure, organize for the I i annual autumn color parade. ! And so, the leaf, so young, ten- ' der and green in the spring per- : forms its annual function of sup- p^jining all life on earth, and I then drifts gently to the forest floor to enrich mother earth. Thus tile life cycle of the leaf is completed but the energy stor- I c*d in the roots, stems and seeds I of plants will renew the cycle In the spring. iTwiK CLAUPIA JENNINGS PLAYBOY MA3AZ1NES'PLAYMATE OF THE YEAR' ^ hr KLilU* A ROOE^ CORMAN PRODUCTION. Take Santa Claus Home Early This gigantic scale moidel of Lake Norman, north of Charlotte, is located at Alden Research Laboratories. Tests conducted here help Duke Power and independent scientists determine the effect of power plants on the environment of the real lake. For example, water temperatures at 600 points of the model are computer- analyzed to predict actual lake temperatures. Dye poured into the waters of the model is also used to track the currents. Such tests help assure that the lukewarm water discharged from our power stations doesn't harm fish and plant life in the lake. This highly advanced research is expected to result in power plant designs that will save millions of dollars. Equally important, it will help us to protect the environment, including a major recreation attraetkm of the Carolinas. This is another way we are trying to be more efficient.
