( Tliere is plenty of room for, expansion ol cattle numl-ers in tile region, but the fnj,t step should be improved pioduclivily and returns from the cattlle on liand, the study report suggest 'd. A higher per"entage calf crop is one pressing need. Others in clude retaining ownership of cal ves longer, selling heavier sal ves and improving animal nutri-' tion. I The study was made by a ; committee of animal scientists I repix'senling six southern states | and headed by Dr. E. R. Rarrick, | N. C. Agricultural Experiment I station rtvsearcher. The final re-1 port of the group underscored the “great opportunity’’ the reg ion has for increasing the re turns from beef cattle. Hut some j improvements must come first. I k Hrt'cding is a traditional prob-; Jlem in commercial beef herds. I Calf crops of ,St) per cent or less I are not uncommon. An SO perj cent calf crop means, for exam-j pie, that out of a herd of 1001 brood cows, 20 fail to prixlute a ■ calf. I The cost of maintaining these i 20 cows dips into returns real-' ized from the sale of the other I SO. It also means, of course, that ; the potential sale of 20 calves is lost. This spring, the average I pricH' of Stocker salves was S2S1 Iier head on state-sponsored sales. Twenty head at that price would' gross Si>,620. ! The regional committee, which, was appointed by the .Southern | Section of the American .Society j of Animal Science, suggested a' goal of 90 jier tent calf crop weaned for the entire region. They suggested individual Iterd owners shoot for a 9.1 per cent i iivertige or better. ' Some of the improvements that I could help reach that goals in-- eluded these: i -Select the breeding season to; fit the farm feed supply in order! to have a favorable time for breeding. Restrict tlie breeding! season with a goal of Ko per cent i of the cowsiDied back in the first! 42 days of the breeding season. -U.se bulls and cows that will | deliver a high percentage of the | salves unassisted. i —Use enough bulls to get the| cows bred in the desired time. ) -Cull heifers that don’t con-i cive, or “settle,’’ in 60 days. | —Prov'de a level of nutrition j that will meet the requirements for maintenance, gestation, lac tation iind rebr«>eding. The study panel also empha- ■ sized the awd for increasing market weights of calves in the region. Too many producers sell 2.10-t.oO-pound calves when re turns could b«‘ increased sub-| stantially by selling at 6.50-7501 pounds, it is suggested. The panel cited other poten-l tial gains that could be realiz-; ed by retaining ownership of j calves throughout the feeding j pitriod, either in custom fe«Kl-1 lots or in on-farm finishing pro-i grams using silage or grain-on-1 grass feeding programs. Producers were calk'd on loj make better use of the region’s j natural advantages for the pro-^ duction of forages and other in-■ expensive feedstuffs. i Martin loins Crawford Firm James I.
