PIEDMONT AVE. 739-3311 By SAMTESENIAR COPE Correspondent At July 20 meeting of COPE guest speaker was Chief of Police Earl Lloyd and Sgt. Richard Reynolds. Invocation was by Rev. FrAnk Shirley, pastor of Temple Bs^tlst Church. Chief Lloyd talked to members about when on patrol what to watch for and how to report. Chief Lloyd pointed out that all cltisens are on patrol even while out riding in their cars. “But the hard fact,” said the Chief, "Is that citizens wouldn’t know If a Clime was going on or not because they don’t notice what is going them In their cars.’’ “If you see something and don’t want to report It cm the CB, get to a phone and call the Police Department and your name will be kept out of It.” Sometimes, it’s better to call In by phone rather than use a CB Radio. Chief Lloyd told mem bers about the low major Clime rate citizens of Kings Mountain enjoy. Chief Lloyd sadd the city will have its own base unit in the very near future and return the one that Is on loan to the police depart ment. Chief Lloyd said he Is working on getting a certificate from the city to give CB’ers who help save a life or stop a crime by using their CB in repor ting. It will be an award the recipient will be proud of, said the Chief. Chief Lloyd told the club, "I’m behind you 100 percent.” Sgt. Reynolds talked to the club about “What to watch for” such as suspicious vehicles cir cling the same block over and over. Mr. Reynolds eiqilalned that a major Clime only takes about two minutes to “come off", reason being that “these crooks have planned every move light down to the second. This la one of the reasons we as citizens should be aware of what Is going on around us at all times especially late at night. Sgt. Reynolds pointed out that CB'ers should “just use common sense when reporting a crime” and noted that a “crook may have a CB radio In his car alto." Noting that criminals can and will use tactics to distract police away from a crime, Reynolds cited the local case of an empty house being set on fire while a crime was being committed In another part, of town. “Keeping this In mind,” said Reynolds, “we would like, not only COPE members but all citizens of Kings Mountain, to ride around and keep your eyes open for anything suspicious. Citizens can help both the police and tire department. Next meeting of COPE is slated Aug. 17.
