For Instance, under a two-mlnute limit an applicant will score 100 pcdnts by completing 60 slt-upa; 100 pdnts for completing 16 puUups In one and a half minutes; 100 points for completing a one-mile run In seven minutes or under. Applicants will further be sub jected to a thorough background In vestigation; moral character; employment and criminal, the same as the state standards, but the city goes further with checks Into mili tary records, all local police files, police flies In otlier cities where applicant may have lived or worked, state department granting driver's license, present and past neighbors and landlords, fraternal and social organizations and credit records. Unlike state standards, local applicants must submit to a poly graph (lie detector) test and an oral Interview. The latter. Chief Lloyd suggested, be conducted by a board constating of no more than five persons In cluding the police chief, commander officers of nearby police agencies and citizens with special qualifica tions In personnel administration from business and Industry. Next Is a medical examination, then. If the iqipllcant la approved, a one year probation period will be re quired. Chief Lloyd said the new minimum requirements policy adopted Monday night Is' 'tough, but necessary to bring high quality police officer material Into the department." School bells will ring tor Kings Mountain district pupils on Wed., Aug. 26, Orientation Day, and first full day of classes will be on Tliurs., Aug. 26. The Orientation schedule calls for registration in all schools at 8:80 a. m., dismissal of elementary pupils at u a. m., dismissal of Central School pupUs at 11 a. m. and dismissal of Junior and Senior High pupUs at U :10 a. m. Buses will be operated on regular schedule. Kindergarten reglstratian will be held on three days and pupils will use their last names to determine the day they will report. That schedule Is: Students last names A- O, Wed., Aug. 26, 9 a. m.) H-R, Thurs., Aug. 26, 9 a. m.; S-Z, Frl., Aug. 27, 9 a. m. Kindergarten and first graders will remain until noon through Sept. 10 and transportation will not be provided for these stu dents to return home. Parents are requested to provide this service. The CETA-employes have worked mainly In beautification projects such as clearing drainage ditches , the railroad right of way, the mlnl-partcs, hospital, library, com munity center, city hall and the public schools.
