GOP Candidate Convoy Planned A OOP candidate "convoy" will form In the upper Cleveland County town of Caaar at 8 a. m. Sat., Oct. 9 and will end five hours later In Kings Mountain as candidates move Into Oaaton County to continue a day of hard campaigning. Preceded by a brass ensemble Into each town and led by Jesse Helms, the senior senator from North Carolina, the whirlwind tour wUl give Cleveland County voters In 10 communities an op portunity to visit briefly and shake hands with candidates for national, state, and local office. They reside at Rt. 3, Kings Mountain with their two children, Monica, 8, and Sajad, 3. HAMBRIOHT REUNION The descendents of Cbl. Fredrick Hambrtght will meet Sim., Oct. lO at 1 p. m. at the Grover Rescue Squad. All family mem bers are urged to attend. Jim Broyhlll, whose reelectlon campaign was delayed until Congress adjourned last Friday, will also lead the convoy which will represent his first major effort In Cleveland County. Gubernatorial candidate Dave Flaherty comes to the county fresh from his radio-TV debates with Democrat Jim Hunt. Flaherty, and candidate for Lt. Governor BUI Hiatt, are expected to continue with the caravan Into neighboring Gaston County. Fred Leigh, who is seeking election as register of deeds, wlU join the motorcade. Candidate convoy organizers urged citizens to gather early at raUy points because a very tight schedule permits only time for brief greetings and handshaking at each stop. The convoy will make a major stcq> In Shelby at (qiproxlmately 11:3S a. m., where candidates will be given a rest period. The headquarters actually opened for business two weeks ago. Everyone Is Invited to participate In the convoy. Masters Is Named Coroner Bennett Masters of Kings Mountain has been appointed to fill the two year unexplred term of the late M. D. (Bub) Walker as Cleveland County Coroner. Walker died last week. Masters had been ser ving as assistant coroner. The county com missioners also appointed James Gold of Shelby as assistant coroner replacing Masters. Gold’s term will run con secutively with that of Masters. Cleveland County Coroner Bennett Masters said that preliminary report of an autopsy revealed that the woman was "stabbed In excesa of 28 Umes and raped after she waa kUled.” Flan Revival Rev. Sunday and theorised that the woman was attacked at her ear, a late-model Bulek parked at the motel. "Her ring finger had been cut with a knife," said Masters, "She must have put out her hand and the blood splashed on top of her car," he said. "The killing looked like the woric of a maniac," said the coroner. Masters said that Dennis Knauer, husbsuid of the victim, said he returned from operating con cessions at a South Oiro- Una fidr Monday to find his wife not In her room and reported her missing. Knauer told Masters that his wife had been receiving obsesne telephone calls while they were registered St s motel In Shelby and had checked Into the Klnga Mountain Inn Friday at 1:46 p. m., bringing their two dogs, one a Doberman Pinscher, with her. Ptl. Mike Sanders of KMPD checked the woman’s room and found the two dogs and a large sum of money. The officer then checked the woman’s car and when he found blood on the roof, searched the nearby wooded area. Masters said that Mrs. Knauer was stabbed all over the top portion of her body and had seven stab wounds, probably made with a small knife, on the side of her neck. According to the coroner, the woman’s slacks were cut or tom and pulled partially from her waist and she was lying on her back in a thickly wooded area. A key to the motel room was found In a scarf In the woods a few feet from the body, he said. Police theorise that the woman returned from her job at the fairgrounds sometime after 8 p. m. Sunday and then returned to her car later in the evening, leaving the dogs In the room. According to KMPD, the dogs barked most of the day Monday. Mr. Knauer told police the dogs did not bark when hli wife was In the room. Tile body was shipped by Harris Funeral Home Wednesday to Miami, Fla. for funeral services and burial.
