Page 2A—MIRROR-HERALD-Thnraday, October SI. IMW Let’s Talk About Our Teens The School Dropout By EARL LLOYD KMChiefofPoUce LDTINO PRINTS - King! Moaatata PoUce Sgt. Richard Reynold! Ufto latent fingerprints from the door of a vehicle belon^ng to Mrs. Charles Blanton reported stolen between lO-ll a. m. Monday and recovered about S p. m. about one block away on Parker St. The car was taken from the parking lot of the KM District Schools Administrative offices on W. Parker St. The 19T2 Monte Chrio was left In front of an abandoned house on Parker St. Last week we touched on what might be done to pre vent a youngster dropping out of school. This week's discussion will be on measures to be taken after It has happened. This of fice has a special Interest In the subject because a high percentage of teens who get Into serious trouble with the law are dropouts. For the parent who has himself gone on through college, the thought of high school dropout la Incom prehensible. Even to the parent who was a dropout Inhla own time It Is hard to understand, because he, more than anyone, knows what a long-range mistake Is being made. What goes through the teen’s mind when he becomes a dropout? Is he concerned with what it will mean to him later, how much it will cost him In unearned Income, the effects It will have on his Urban Renewal And Housing Coming Together bi Spring future family? Obviously he thinks only of himself, and what else could be expected of him, at this stage In emotional development he Is taking a seemingly final, easy way out of what appears to him as a lot of senseless hard wwk. Quick, Immediate countermeasures are needed. Some found to be helpful are: 1. Arrange with a young college student — one who is having to work to help put himself through school — to talk to your dropout aboxit why he is putting forth aU the effort it ob viously takes. 2. Determfiie what your youngster likes to do best, and try to tie it in with a career later. Example: he likes building model air planes, and this might lead to beoximlng an aeronauti cal engineer, but certainly not with lesa than a college educatlcn. Show him how, without proper formal education, he cannot do the things he most enjoys and will have to forego them In favor of work he won’t like to do, just to make enough Income to survive. Point out the alternative occupa tions, using those you know would be most repulsive to him. 8. If he Is involved with a girl he cares for, discuss the poaslblUtles of later marriage, how due to his lack of education, she will always have to work to help support their family. And, that she will most likely have more education than he and probably as a result, earn more money than her husband all their lives. Make him cringe at the thought, work on his ego. 4. If there U a famUy church bond, arrange for him to have a talk with your minister. Even a minister unfamiliar with the family or this situation would be more than willing to help In counsel. 6. Prearrange a talk with an employment counselor, preferably one connected with a private employment agency. Pay for the time taken, if necessary, for having the differences In job avaUablUtles explained by a professional will carry considerable weight < Please Turn To Page 3A) For A Beautiful Figure Try Our Fabulous Olrdle with Ught Weight Flgur, Control Custom Fitted Bra’s PENNYMCH CREA'nONS S17S. The base coats applied first will preserve the road beds until paving can be done.” Eight firms bid on the street construction contract last Friday and the bids ranged from a low of $S32,S80.S5 to a high of $666,709.71. The initial engineering estimate of the project cost was $606,090.60. White said the initial street con struction will probably begin on N. Railroad Ave. This street runs beside the Southern Railroad right of way and between the housing authority units for the elderiy and Elmer Lumber Co. White said negotiations are complete with the railroad for the right to fill In the embankment on the RR right of way In order to widen the street to 60 feet. Curbing and guttering will be constructed on the Elmer Lumber Co. easement granted the redevelopment commission. ”It Is something of a miracle that all of this work, completion of the R- 96 project and the housing authority units, coincides,” White ssdd. “It looks like the first occupants of these low Income units will enter the premises on new streets.” CRAFTS FESTIVAL Saturday, Sunday, November 6 - 7 CLEVELAND TECH’S CAMPUS Interested craftsmen clip and mail application to: Cleveland Tech, 137 S. On October 18. 1978, the Kings Mountain Jaycees kicked off their local Cam paign In an effort to help collect 10,000,000 pennies for the state-wide Jaycee 10 Million Penny Project. Local residents are encouraged to coUect pen nies or other change In whatever vessel they choose and ccmtrlbute to the growing pile of pennies at Kings Mountain Drug, between the hours of 9 a. m. and 9 p. m. through November 16. Ten mllUon pennies la a lot of pennies, but that Is , the goal of the state-wide Jaycee 10 MllUon Penny PfOjbct — to raise 10 million pennies or $100,000 to help the North CkiroUna Easter Seal Society buUd a special swimming faciUty at their new camp for handicapped chUdren and adults In North CaroUna. Gamp Sertoma. Each of the Jaycee regions across the state has as Its goed the coUec- tlon of 1,600,000 pennies, or, as Gerald Wheeler, state chairman tor the project says, “about six pounds of pennies per member. Ten million pennies to provide a special swimming faculty at the Easter Seal’s Society’s Camp Sertoma la a dream — a dream that wUl become a reaUty with your help and participa tion.” He emphasised that “anything goes during the drive — nickels, dimes, quarters,” and that the Jaycees wUl convert siU proceeds to pennies, so that at the end of the campaign they wlU be able to say “Thanks 10 MUMon.” START YOUR SAVINGS ACCOUNT TODAY AT HOME Savings & Loan Association cq/ NOTICE U J/4 PASSBOOK ** SAVINGS Cl/ REGl'EAR U /4 passbook 4«1/ SAVINGS n '/2 CERTIFICATE $1,000.00 minimum.
