While most areas of the
country have finally ac
cepted hair style freedom
as a basic right, others
hold fast to the old stan
dards, with the clean
shaven, burr-cut look
standing for law-abiding

m. Damages, according to
Ptl. Billy Benton, were
estimated at $76 to
Bumgardner-s vehicle and
$160 to the Jackson car.

A Friday smash-up at
2:40 p. m. on Second St.
Involved a psu'ked vehicle
owned by Verleen S.
McOirry, of 810Second St.,
and a 1072 Plymouth
operated by Melvin Haskel
Carroll, 1007 Piedmont
Ave. According to Sgt. B.
P. Cook, the Carroll car
was traveling south on the
left side of the street and
struck the parked vehicle.
Damages were estimated
at $600 to the front end of
the Carroll car.
A "rear end collision”
occurred Saturday at 1:60
p. m. Involving cars
operated by Thomas W.
Ooodson, Gastonia, and
Joseph O. Greene, Shelby.
Greene said he was slow
ing down for a vehicle to
turn and was hit by ths
Goodson car. Mrs. Dorothy
Gregg, 61, was treated for
Injuries. She was a
passenger In the Greene
car.
Brake failure was
blamed for the two-car
crash on U. S. 74 Monday
at 1:16 p. m., reported Ptl.
Mike Sanders who said
that David Michael
Brackett, of Greenville, S.
C., reported diat brakes on
hla 1078 Ford SWG failed at
a traffic light and his car
struck a 1670 Ford
operated by Vickie H.
Black, Rt. 1, Grover.
Damages totaled $1200.

We hear often that law
officers pay closer at
tention to the activities of
"long hairs.” While this
may have been true when
the fad started. It has little
basis In fact now. And If
this thinking prevailed,
police officers would
surely be spending a lot of
unnecessary time ob
serving gray headed long
hairs as many from the
Intelligentsia have Joined
the group of hair-
worshipers. Let’s face It,
some like attention no
matter what must be done
to achieve It, If that is a
real reason for suc
cumbing to hair style
trends.
Excessive hair' adorn
ment, while It may show
lack of cuicem for con-
voitlanallty by the old
standards, will have little
If any Influence,
subliminal or otherwise, on
a youngster's deep-seated
atandards. If he has been
taught the right and wrong
basics, his hair Isn't going
to make him forget, nor Is
he headed automatically
toward an unruly existence
because of his long hair.
If your teen’s hair makes
you ashamed and
disgusted, you'll probably
have to do something
unique to get It changed. In
law enforcement we have
decided not to let hair
bother us. Everyone we
"do business with” will be
treated equally In this
