DO IT THIS WAT - KMH8 glrto
basketball coach Kathy Brooks goes
over team strategy with her players
during a key timeout In Friday’s game
with Burns at the KMHS gym. The
Fhoto By Oary Stewart
Mbuntalnettes gave one of their better
efforts of the season but Bums used a
good four-comers to seal the victory in
the final three minutes.
Mature Gray Meets
The Premature Gray
WINSTON-SALEM -
The mature gray will meet
the premature gray this
Saturday night at
Memorial Coliseum when
the Wake Forest Uni
versity Demon Deacons
step out of the Atlantic
Coast Conference to face
Appalachian State
University's Moun
taineers.
Deacon head coach Carl
Tacy recently sat his team
down at a practice and
showed them a four year
old picture taken when his
hair was as Jet black as
Rhett Butler's. "See what
you've done to me," joked
Tacy. Appalachian head
coach Bobby Cremlns, at
age 19, Is as gray as Tacy
Is now. Tacy Is the wlsened
veteran of ACC wars,
Cremlns remains the
sparkling young head
coach who copped Coach of
the Year honors In the
Southern Conference as a
rookie a year ago.
There's a contrast In
coaching and personal
styles that will be In
teresting for basketball
fans to watch. Tacy con
trols a well-oiled machine
that has played strong
basketball since the season
openers at the Big Four
tournament. There's little
question In the minds of
basketball observers that
Tacy sits atop his game
right now as never before.
Last week at the Wake
Forest Sportsman Club
network analyst Billy
Packer said "If a vote was
conducted today there
would be no question that
Carl Tacy Is the number
one coach In the nation
today."
Many would brand such
statements as heresy until
you look at the mileage
Tacy la getting from his
starting five, and sixth and
seventh men Leroy Mc
Donald and Don Mulnlx.
On the other hand,
Cremlns has his hands full
right now with his
Southern Conference
schedule. Many picked the
Apps to have another
strong sesLson this year but
they have sputtered of late
with a tough slate after
Christmas that Included
Marshall, William A Mary,
VMI, Furman, and UNC-
Charlotte. If you're looking
for comparative scores,
the Apps beat WlUiam A
Mary In Boone, lost to
them In Williamsburg, and
the Deacs went to overtime
against William A Mary
efore Christmas. Ap
palachian lost to Maryland
by two points at College
Park while the Deacs won
by one In overtime. Ap
palachian also clipped
Furman, a team that
should have the talent to
challenge VMI for the SC
title this season.
While the Apps have not
played strong basketball
for a while, they still have
the capacity to play with
anybody around. Having
spent two years at Ap-
paUtchlan prior to coming
to Wake Forest I have an
appreciation of the way a
Bobby Cremlns team can
play basketball In January
and February. There's no
doubt that Cremlns won his
coaching honors last
season based on the play of
his team In the last six
weeks of the slate. Right
now the Apps have a strong
team that Is waiting to Jell
and when the pieces fall
together Cremlns will be
on the road to wins again.
fl
For the Deacs the Ap
palachian encounter
provides a break In the
AOC race prior to entering
a February slate that Is as
toug^ as Janusiry has been.
Carl Tacy Is finding more
reasons to smile during
this portion of the slate
than In past years. He has
a veteran team that un
derstands the Intricate
subtleties that make the
game happiness In winning
times and sadness, during
losing. But It's a team with
the capacity to bounce
back from adversity
quickly.
Most assuredly both
coaches will gray a bit
more and there will
probably come a time
when Carl Tacy looks down
toward the ASU bench,
sees Cremlns, and gets the
feeling he's looking to a
mirror of the past.
Cremlns most assuredly
will see Tacy as his mirror
of the future.
An Interesting game Is
on tap . . . one that will
probably fuel the tires for a
full time Wake Forest-
Ai^ialachlan rivalry.
