Good And Bad News For Kings Mountain Police Cbmmlssloners had good news and bad news for the Kmgs Mountain Police Department Mraiday night. The good news was the award of a contract to Slrchle Finger print Laboratory to outfit the police department’s Crime Scene Search vehicle. The bad news was denial of a request to sqiply to the Law Enforcement Agency (L£AA) fOr a grant to prmrlde In-service trainmg for police personnel. Rodney Wins S^ond Bike ■a'lA'SWs •. (From PagelA) There are still 33 young boys and girls out there knocldng on doors and selling new eub- scribers for a year, m the short time the summer circulation campaign has been on we have added over 100 new subscribers to our msdllng list. Meanwhile, the young salespeople are earning them selves new bikes or cash or both. Any number of new subscribers under or over 20 earns the salesperson $3 per subscription. The first 20 automatically earns the salespersons a new bike from TGAY In West Gate Shopping Plaza. New subscribers are being added to our mailing list as fast as possible In order for them to begin receiving their twice weekly Mirror-Herald. A year’s subscription of $8.30 In advance saves readers $7.10 on the twice weekly street sales. It’s something to think about. Commissioner Norman King made the motion to deny the request based on the wording of the LEAA grant contract “To my knowledge we have never signed a grant contract that called for the city to con tinue any program after the initial grant ran out,’’ King said. Larry Billings, a former grants manager for LEAA before coming to Kings Moun tain as business development director, told King that all of the contracts the city had had with LEIAA for grants contained the same wording. “However, there la no way LEAA could force the city to continue, .A .program. once the. grant has expired,” Billings said. “That would be left to the discretion of the board. If the program proved worthwhile during the first year under an LEAA grant, then the city would have the choice to either drop the program or continue It at the city’s expense.” The In-service training grant would provide 40-hours of training for each police department employe by paying a saliaiy to officers called In to substitute for an officer taking the training course. The grant would also provide funds for the locsil department to purchase an audio-video tape machine In order for the local department to conduct Its own training sessions. No amount was specified In volving the grant during Mon day’s meeting. The contract awarded to Slrchle Fingerprint Labs of Raleigh was, for $7,880, which will be covered under the $7,400 LEAA grant approved several months ago. This figure Includes training for two officers In Morristown, Pa. while the crime vehicle Is being equipped. The city’s share of the program Is five percent, phis gas expenses for the vehlcl'; to be driven to Morristown. Chief Earl Lloyd and Det. Sgt. Richard Reynolds wlU transport the vehicle and take the training course. They will In turn liutruct local officers In use of the vehicle and equipment In one other action conoemlng the police, the commissioners voted to table a request to ad vertise for bids for new uniforms.
