Beginning July 25,
victims of rape or at-

asked to call the After-

their nanws, answer a
few general questions,
such as whether they re

why; whether they
know the attacker;
under what circum
stances the attack oc
curred; what type of
medical astostance they
received at the time;
whether their alleged

their own feelings about

Miriam J. Dorsey,
executive director of the
OouncU on the Status of
Woman, said no statis
tics are now available
on unreportsd rapes In
North Carolina. "We
have no way of knowing
the extent of the prob
lem of rape.” she said,
"because many women
may not report their
atUcks. The reports
may just be the tip of the
loebsr|.”
Last year, according
to the N. C. PoUce In
formation Network, 500
actual rapes were
reported. In addition to
207 attempted rapes.
Other attempted rapes
may be reported simply
ass an attack or an as
sault on a female, which
are lesser charges.
"The survey will help us
substantiate the extent
of the problem we have
here," said Ms. Dorsey.
In addition to estab
lishing a more accurate
count of sexual assaults,
and attempted assaults,
project administrators
hope to find out reasons
why the IncldenU are
not Edways reported. In
turn, they hope to create
a more positive attitude
toward reporting, thus
eventually limiting this
type of crime.
