Mra. Taylor aald only four realdenta thua far have atated they do not want atop
algna erected.
"There are 20 mlleaper hour apeed limit algna along the atreet," Mra. Taylor
aald, "but no cne aeema to pay them any attention. Cara whiz along thla atreet at
40 mph or better and thla la very dangeroua. Eapeclally to the email chUdren who
are not attending achool.”
Mra. Taylor aald on the block ahe Uvea on (the 400 block) there are leaat 13
emaU children In realdence. She aald, "and In the 800 block klda have to wailk
along the atreet where there are no aldewalka."
She aald the atreet la too narrow for faat traffic. "My huaband diivea the atreet

"Weat Oold la one of three main roada from the center of town to the chopping
center on the weat," Mra. Taylor aald. "It la the only one of three that haa a 26
mph apeed limit and the only one of the three that doean’t have atop algna.' ’
She aald each time the local police have been caUed they were reaponalve and
did atop aeveral apeedera, but alnce the petition began circulating and realdenta
have algned, Mra. Taylor aald ahe and her nelghbora feel that more can be done
to curb the apeedlng.
"Stop algna, we figure, are the beat devlcea to get motoiiata to alow down,"
ahe aald.
Tiie petltlona wUl be turned over to the city commlaalcmera with a requeat that
action be taken on the matter at next Monday’a board meeting.

newcomer to local campaigns.

district two, Amos and Barnette
are In district five and Dickey Is

Blddlx Is a Kings Mountain
native who served on the city
board from 1866 to 1978. He was
an unsuccessful candidate for
the board In 1876. The candidate
was educated In the local
schools and during World War
Two served In the Army Air
Force, stationed In France. He is
a member of East Gold Street
Wesleyan Church where he Is
assistant Sunday School toMher
In the Men’s Bible Class. He Is a
member of the American Legion
and a S2nd degree Mason.

Senior Citizens To Be Hired
Seven senior citizens will be
selected to hold down parttime
Jobs with the city to use 824,600
'allocated under a new federal
program.
Under Title 8, Older
Americans Act, Kings Mountain
has been approved for seven
positions for citizens 66 years of
age and older who meet the
annual Income poverty level.
Cleveland County was granted
$88,888 and the city’s share totals
$24,600 to fund the seven Jobs.
Applications for the unem
ployed or employed with poverty
level Income In the city will be
taken beginning at 10:80 a. m.
today In the mayor’s office at
city hall.
Tlie city has two positions In
the aging program at $8.42 per
hour; two Jobs as recreational
activity supervisors at $4.62 per
hour; two Jobs as warehouse
supply clerks at $6.03 per hour;
and one custodial position at the
water and waste treatment
plants at $8.88 per hour. All of the
Jobs are set for 30 hours each
week now through June 30, 1978.
Experience In the allocated
fields will be a requirement for
applicants along with age and
Income level guidelines.
Mayor Jc^n Moss said, "If the
program proves successful we
anticipate renewing the program
for another year."

Bcumette la a Kings Mountain
native who served in the U. S.
Army In World War Two. For 18
years Barnette was employed by
the N. C. Prison System as a
guard at the Taylorsville and
Shelby .units. Presently, he Is
owner and operator of Barnette’s
Paik And Shop on Hwy. 74 West.
The candidate Is married to
the former Jay Aroowood of
Kings Mountain. They have
three children, Mrs. Geraldine
Randle of Shelby, Mn. Pam
Crocker of Grover and Tommy
Lee Barnette of Kings Mountain.
The Barnettes are members of
Second Baptist Church, where
Barnette serves as president of
his Sunday School class. He has
