Page 6A—M1RROR-HERAIhD—Thursday, September 88, 1977 Pop’s At It Again •••• Short cuts from the world of sports: WUUam (Pop) Poster, Kings Mountain’s 73- year-old golfer who shoots his age. Just continues to be amazing. Tou read here recently that Pop scored the first hole-ln-one of his career on the par three 14th hole at Kings Mountain Country Club. Tou’U recall, he used his trusty five Iron, one of only five clubs that he carries. To top that hole-ln- one effort. Pop went out last Tuesday and scored an eagle two on the peu* four third hole at mfCC. And, you guessed It, he used old faithful, the five Iron . . . Monday nl^t’s KM-Chase gsune, which drew an estimated 5,000 fans, was the biggest drawing card In the Mountaineers' history In John Oamble Stadium. An estimated 10,000 fans Jammed the stadium Isurt year to view a Hunter Huss-Ashbrook GI^RY 9TGWt^RT -Piddn* The Winners game This should be the toughest week yet In pickin’ the winners as there are several high school and college games that could go either way. Former Chase star Billy Ray Vickers has to be one of the best second string halfbacks In college foofoaU. As a backup at N. C. State, Vickers Is averaging over 100 yards per game, and his performance has helped the Psusk win two In a row over Virginia and Syracuse. . . . Two former Kings Mountlans got a big kick out of Ashbrook’s recent 21-7 victory over the Mountaineers. One, Shu Carlton, Is a former KMHS and Ashbrook coach who Is now athletic director for the Gaston County Schools. The other, .Tim Echols, a former KMHS athlete. Is an Ash brook assistant ... A national survey published last week shows that baseball Is back at the top as the most popular q>ort among fans. . . . Tom Barnette passes along this fish story: Back a couple of years ago, Tom was on his way to Chimney Rock and spotted a trout In the river that ‘ runs along Highway 74. “I Jumped In and chased ! that fish three or four miles,” he said. “Flnsdly, It ' Jumped In a pool with three or four hundred other trout. But I was determined. I Jumped In, grabbed that fish and threw It up on the bank. The reason I know It was the same fish Is because It was wringing wet with sweat from me chasing It so far.” Ihose of you who know Tom know he wouldn’t tell a lie ... . I stopped In Herman Blalock’s Grocery the other day and Herman said he had messed up his foofoall contest blank and probably would be disqualified. ”I picked Davidson,” he said, "and they’re not even playing. There are two other teams playing at Davidson, Washington smd Lee.” Washington and Lee, I explained. Is the same team, not two different ones. But, from the looks of the contest blanks, Herman wasn’t the only person fooled on that one. Several people picked Washington, several picked Lee, and one person wma picked Lee at Davidson . . . Khws Mounteln.< iagM%v<00t1>aU_t|5am g|id cheerteaders were special guests at Saforday night’s Gardner-Webb - Newberry football game and saw G-W win 9-7 behind BUI Salyers’ four pass interceptions and MOke Cox’s fourth quarter 43-yard field goal, which erased a 7-6 Newberry lead .... EAST GASTON AT SHELBT — ThU Is one high school game, along wltti South Point at Chase, that could decide an early SWC champion. East Gaston has the material to beat Shelby, but the Lions are awfully hard to beat In a big game on their home field. We’ll call for a 28-30 Shelby win and hope we miss. EAST RUTHERFORD AT KINGS MOUNTAIN - Kings Mountain Is coming off one of the toughest battles of Its life cmd Is probably physlcaUy drained. But the Mountaineers have too much determination to let down. They should beat East 20-7. SOUTH POINT AT CHASE - Chase, like KM, won’t let down after a tough battle. The Trqjans can help KM out by beating South Point, and I think they’U do It, 14-18. NORTH GASTON AT R-S CENTRAL - In thU battle of the winless, I see the HlUtoppers winning their first game, 20-14. CREST AT BURNS — Should be no contest. Crest, 85-14. "Boggan did a real good Job,” noted Jcnes. “He went In there and wasn’t scared and showed the type of leadership that we needed.” Mountles were penalized 15 yards for holding and his second attempt from 84 yards out was short. That left Chase with an opportunity to score and win the game on a two-point conversion. Shortly alter Chase’s second TD which cut the score to 18-13, Robinson returned to the game all to the delight of the Mountaineer fans, and behind his leadership the Mountles ate three big minutes off the clock before Chase got ttie ball again. The Trojans moved from their own 18 to the KM 88 behind Stroud’s passing, but on a big third down play, Bum- gardner broke through to throw Stroud for a big loss, and a fourth down pass fell Incomplete with 15 seconds re maining. Jones called the game “one of the most ex citing I’ve ever been In volved In” and praised his players, assistant coaches and the fans for their part In the victory. “It was Just a good determined effort by all the football players,” he said. "Everybody did a real good Job. The assistant coaches did a good Job In preparing them to play, and the people really got behind us.” WAKE FOREST AND N. C. STATE - State came around last week but we see a Deacon victory, 34-31. NORTH CAROLINA AT NORTHWESTERN - In a hard-fought battle, we see the Tw Heels winning on a field goal, 17-14. GEORGIA AT SOUTH CAROLINA — If the Junkyard Dogs lose two in a row to South Carolina teams, Georgians will be calling for Vince Dooley’s head. We i see the Bulldogs halting Carolina’s winning streak, 85-81. CLEMSON AT GEORGIA TECH — Maybe Clemaon’s for real. We’ll call.lt 38-34, Tlgszs. . OARDnElC-W||BB;;(tf'MARS HILLG-W has been billed sis a hlglh • scoring offensive but weak defensive team. It was exactly the opposite In last week’s 9-7 win over Newberry. Bulldogs should get the offense going this week and beat Mars Hill, 81-30. Chase moved 76 yards early In the third period to get on the board, Stroud going over from one yard out. Valentine then stopped the first of two Chase conversion attempts, and the Mountles held on to their 7-6 lead. Boggan, the only KM quarterback to com- ^^‘ k' pdsi alt year, thm went to the aU* to lead the Moimtalneers to their final TD and a little breathing room. ^kctwhonlc PROFESSIONAL RECORDING STUDIO This professional stereo recording system is a fantastic buy!
