Richard Egan stars In Larry MaravlgUa's new play concerning the trials of a young unmarried teacher, her dubious lover and a recently divorced man with more charm than the law allows. Egan is the charming divorcee, fresh from San Francisco and a 28-year marriage and newly In stalled In an apartment complex In Sacramento, California. Austell. Michael White appears as Roger Middleton, the very prim and proper teacher planning to divorce his wife In order to marry Jennifer. What could be funny about such a triangle? Try this on for size: Jennifer is frustrated be cause, although she is seeing Roger, nothing Is happening. It Isn’t because she doesn’t try, however. It Is because Roger vows to remain faithful to his estranged wife until his son’s 18th birthday, the time he will divorce his wife. "But, Roger! You’re son Is only 10 years old!” Jennifer remarks. Enter Phil Stockdale (Egan) and the whole ball of wax starts to roll. We have seen Egan woo beautiful ladies, do battle as a gladiator, gun down western badmen and even serve as the late Elvis Presley’s big brother for the rock singer's film debut. Granted he didn’t have many laughs In these roles, but as Stockdale in "Hanky Panky” It was pleasing to discover that Richard Egan’s comedlc acting talents are con siderable. So considerable. It causes you to wonder about the judgment of Hollywood film producers: why they do not explore the deeper talent reserves of many actors labeled strictly as dramatic leading men. Comedy Is so much more difficult than drama for an actor and. true, many ac tors are Incapable of sus taining the energy and timing comedy requires. Fortunately, Richard Egan does sustain and his timing and delivery ranks him with the best. This comment isn’t so much puff but made out of respect (or Egan's talent. You must bear In mind that Egan and company have performed this same show numerous times In numerous other theatres before settling for the PlnevUle run. Besides having Egan for his lead, the author of this play should also be grate ful for the strong suppor ting cast. Ms. Singleton presents a refreshing “young thlng- type” hue to her role. She Is genuinely funny throughout the three acts and yet she retains the vulnerablUty and beauty vital to make the character breathe. Barnes. very nature of his role, would be the vllUan of the piece since he stands In the way of the hero getting the girl, but there are no vllllans In "Hanky Panky” White’s essay of "good" 'ol Roger” Is so prim and proper that he alerts the audience to the fact that he Is In fact his own worst enemy. Very proper la Roger, but on his own level, as furmy as they come. And there Is a fourth character, not Introduced until the third act, who manages to elevate the already hysterical proceedings to an even higher level. The character Is Margaret Stockdale, portrayed by Broadway veteran CTmls Wilson. Margaret Is a complex character. She comes on wide-eyed, bewildered and proclaiming naivete, but beneath that you recognize she Is a survivor. In the brief time she has to Intro duce all of these traits believably, Ms. Wilson proves she Is a master. "Hanky Panky" has so many unexpected twists and turns to try to spell them out would only spoil the fun (or those of you who haven’t seen the show. It’s better that you make plans to see the play (or your selves. It’s worth the trip and the money. “Hanky Panky” Is scheduled to run until the first week In December at PlnevUle Dinner Theatre.
