Mary Tiimns Guest Speaker For DAR Mri. Mary Timms, Executive Director of the Cieveland County Chapter '‘W the American Red Oita, wae guest q>eaker at the March meeting of Colonel Frederick Ham- brtght Chivter, DAR. Her program topic was "A Source of Strength In Community Service - The American Red Cross." Mrs. Timms asked members "what does Red Chta Mean To You?" and said that probably the most common answer was the blood program, elaborating on the many services offered In Cleveland County In cluding service to military families, disaster aid, first aid Instructors, youth leadership, CPR and water safety Instructors and the blood program. A total of 3S1 certificates were Issued to citizens completing first aid courses and water safety certificates went to M. One of the newest pro grams Is Cardlo Pulmonary Resuscitation and a total of 304 cer tificates In life saving were presented to county resi dents. This course Is very beneficial to the lay person due to choking, drowning, and heart airest, teaching an Individual how to open airways, restore breathing and restore pulse. In Kings Mountain Physical Education teachers at Central School are trained Red Cross First Aid instructors and Weekend Revival Features Rev. Hunt Rev. Johnny Hunt, pastor of Lavcnla Baptist Church of Oaffney, S. C., will bo evangelist for a weekend revival at David Baptist Church beginning FH., Mar., 10th and con tinuing through Sun., Mar. 13th. Services Friday and Saturday will be at 7:80 p. m. Services Sunday will be at 11 a. m. and 7 p. m. The public Is Invited and there will be special singing by the Church Choir and a nursery provided for each Rev. Hunt Is a native of i Wilmington and he and his wife, the former Janet Lee REV. Service to military famlUes and veterans Is a dally service, not Just In time of war. This service sq>pUea to emergencies In Immediate families which Red Cross defines as death notices, accidents, hoepltallzatian, q>eclflc financial needs. With every active service member there Is a Red Cross worker on the military base. Explaining this procedure, Mrs. Timms said that "to reach a service member stationed In the Continental U. S., we call the Red Cross office at the base where he or she Is stationed, they in turn relay the message to the service member and return an answer to us when necessary. In reaching a service member stationed out of the Oontmental U. 8., we call AMOtOSS, a cen tralised office located In Washington, D. C. who In turn relay our message to the Red Cross office where the servlcs member may be steUoned. Within a matter of hours the emergency message Is received. Red Cross volunteers are on duty at VA hospitals and also suntly such items, as lap robes, sweaters, cast covers, and bed socks to the patients. Dlssster teams are on call to work with firemen and fire victims and seven members of the Disaster Team helped with assign ments during the Western Carolina floods. Many others worked through the night during lea storms, feeding vmicers^qpenlng shelters, checking nursing homes In the area and assisting those living In mobile homee during wind storms. Blood quota for the year Is B,B00 pints of blood and during the first six months of the fiscal year a total of 3316 pints were collected at bloodmoblle visits. "Red Ooss could not perform these services without the many dedicated volunteers throughout the county," said Mrs. Timms.
