That’s the question facing the Kings Mountain District School Board, which is considering what should be done with the rapidly deteriorating Com pact School. The plant la no longer used by the school system and is currently In need of 18,138 worth of repairs. The school Is used by Cleveland Tech for Its adult continuing education programs but Tech does not pay rent nor haia it been helping out In repairs. According to Assistant Supt. Bill Bates, Tech foots the light and gas bills. After Monday’s board meeting, it appears Tech may In the future have to either maintain the building or pay rent. Board members authorised Supt. BUI Davis to discuss Uie problem with Tech offi cials and determine what action Tech would be willing to take. Bates reported that there is a great vandalism problem at Compact and said that two weeks ago someone caused $800 damage by rocking the windows. There also are mimerous other problems, including high mineral content In the water, pumphouse, boiler, guttering and plumbing problems, and V need to paint the exterior. "We’re not suggesting we seU the building or any thing like that,’’ said Davis. "But we need to take a close look at what we should do with it.” Supt. Davis said he foresees future use of the building by the local schools only In die case of a renovation program at an other school. "It could be handy to move some students In there on a temporary basis," he said. In other action Monday, the board: — Was Informed of a School Board Law Con ference to be held today and Friday tn Raleigh. — Accepted a bid of $3,888.47 from Arnold’s Well DrUUng for an lirlgatlon system at John Gamble Stadium. — Accepted the 1978-79 school calendar. It in cludes August 14 as the first day for teachers, August 33 as the first day for students and June 6 as the 180th day. — Was told by Director of Instruction Howard Bryant that the corn- competence tests had been administered to all llth grade students and that die annual state tests will be given in the near future. — Adopted a resolution for changing the budget. — Accepted the resigna tion of Jane Shields, North School teacher, who has accepted a position in Albemarle. — Approved the transfer of Angela and Karen Pressley from Bethware to West and Angela Patterson from Shelby Qty Schools to Kings Mountain. — Approved the sale of two pickup trucks owned by the school system. — Denied a request for an Easter Seals Read-A- Thon. — Tabled action on an audit contract. — Was told a new No Damages Reported In Church Fire Kings Mountsdn firemen answered a call Wed nesday at 3 p. m. to Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church. Moss ivas in Washlngtcn recently for meetings at which con gressional and ad ministration officials pre sented InformatlcHi and ex changed ideas about issues affecting local govern ment. The annual Congressional - dty Cm- ference, convened from March S-7 by the National League of CtUea, attracted nearly 3,000 elected local officials from all parts of the United States. The three-day meeting featured an update by NLC President Tom Moody, mayor of Columbus, Ohio, and by other NLC leaders on the events In Washlng- tm which may affect local govenunents this year. Other conference activi ties Included the develop- ' merit''6f work plans hy NLCTs policy commttteba and special task forces which are composed of elected officials, a review of President Carter’s proposed budget, and a full day of individual and small group meetings on C^iltol Hill with senators and members of Congress. President Carter’s national urban policy, which will be announced later this month, dominated the meeting. Stuart Elzenstat, the chief White House advisor on domestic policy Issues, gave a background presentation on the presi dent’s urban strategy. Other administration offi cials addressing the meeting were HEW Secre tary Joseph A. Callfano, Labor Secretary F.
