SEE SCOTT HILL and CATCH ’EM EARLY SHELBY VOLKSWAGEN formation Institute reminds North Carolinians that March and April statistically form the worst part of the tornado season for their state. ’Tornadoes have struck North Oaro- Una 260 times In 34 years, killing 21 persons. In 1676 alone, 17 persons were In jured as 38 tornadoes swept the state. As warm weather m)- proaches and the likeli hood of tornado and other windstorm activity In creases, an Institute spokesman offers these safety guidelines: — Keep a weather ear alert. Sons are favorable for tornadoes In your srea. — A tornado warning Is an alert that one or more tomadoea has been sighted visually or on radar In your area. If a tornado warning Is brosidcast for your area, you should seek shelter Immediately. Civil Defense sirens often are sounded to alert those In the path of a tornado. You may have only minutes or seconds to find shelter. — At home, seek shelter In the basement or the central part of your house. Take cover on the lowest floor In a small room or under the staircase. Crawling under heavy furniture such as a bed or table also may provide protection. — At‘work, go to an Interior hallway on the lowest floor of an office building, below ground. If possible. Stay away from windows and glass walls. If your property Is damaged or destroyed by a tornado, here are steps to take that will speed settle ment of any Insurance claims: — Make temporary repairs to prevent further damage — reasonable expenses are covered by moat policies or are tax deductible as casualty losses. — Give a report of the damage to your agent or company along with a telephone number, and — Prepare a detailed Inventory of all damaged or destroyed personal property. It will take time In a disaster to process the many damage claims filed. Additional claims adjusters may be flown In from other parts of the country. Serious cases will be given priority. The Insurance In formation Institute reminds residents that plaimlng for the unex pected before severe weather strikes may save lives and prc^erty. And putting safety first after an encounter with a tornado can help storm victims protect themselves and their families from Irtjury and death during the tint t few hours after thi disaster.
