1 Thursday, March 28. 1978-MIRROR-HERALD-Page SB A First-Hand Learning Experience a; Photos By Lib Stewart BRIDE-ELECT HONORED - Miss Susan Ballew, right, Is served punch by Mrs. Jack Amette, one of the hostesses for a drop-ln coffee Saturday morning at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Frank Slncox. I learned Tuesday first hand about one of the voca tional education programs offered to students at Kings Mountain Senior High School. Sheet Allison and Kerniy Burton, two of my neigh bors In the Dixon Com munity, and members of the auto mechsmlcs class at KMHS were “good Samaritans’* when my 1974 Bulck failed to start at KMSHS about 1 p. m. They put their good training In practice, quickly attaching a Jumper cable. As It turned out, the problem was In the starter switch. Vocational education programs were discussed at a iSnoon luncheon In the Home Economics Depart ment In which Dr. Michael Latta, Executive Director of the State Advisory Council, explained In a meeting before the local Vocational Education Advisory OoimcU of vriilch Kyle Smith Is chairman. Dr. Latta elaborated on the state and local advisory councils as they apply to vocational education. LIB STEWART Dr. Latta pointed out that under Vocational Education legislation passed by the U. S. Con gress, the North Carolina State Advisory Ooundl on Vocational Education has been established to advise the State Board of Education In development of a flve-yesu* pUn for vocational education, the annual program plan and accountability report and to advise the State Board on policy matters. It Is the aim of a good advisory group to be "eyes and ears” of the school board and share helpful In formation. Dr. Latta said he la concerned that smnually 28,900 kids drop out of public schools and a viable program In vocational education csin help prevent this tragedy. He said the 1979-81 session of the Oeneral Assembly will be asked to fund vocational education at 100 percent level. (In KM District Schools now the local district must contribute 80 percent.) Dr. Latta foresees the loss's and 1990’s, there "will not be a need for as many college graduates, explsdnlng that statistics show that 80 percent of Jobs will require less than a degree." "We need to concentrate cn these 28,900 students who drop out and later become welfare cases and even wind up In prison,” said Latta, of Raleigh, who holds a Ph.D. from Duke University. Myers Hambrlght arranged the program. Rep. Edith Luts was a visitor at the luncheon, took the occasion to praise the district system for Its program of vocational education. "Every child Is definitely not college material," said Mrs. Lutz, "and my hat's off to you for giving these children such opportunities.” Drop-in Honors Susan rr ft. m‘j ENTERTAIN — Mrs. Frank Slncox, left, serves refreshments to Mrs. W.
