Volunteer Tea
Held At Grover
Orover School’s first
"Volunteer Tea” was held
Tuesday In the school
library and an enthuslsiatlc
group of parents and other
school supporters turned
out.
Principal Jim Scruggse
and Mrs. Carolyn Roark,
outlined how volunteers
can help In the school
classroom.
Hie get-to-gether was
arranged by officers of the
Parent-Teacher
Organization. Mr. and
Mrs. Jim Oarver are co
presidents and Dr. and
Mrs. Olln Whltener are co-
vlce-presldents.
After chatting about
services that volunteers
can render, the group
enjoyed homemade cake
and Iced tea.
Princlpsd Scruggs said
numerous parents have
volunteered for classroom
assistance when needed
and the P-TO Is a valuable
part of the school program
at Orover Elementary
School. He thanked the P-
T-O for their continuing
support of school
programs and encouraged
any Interested Orover area
citizens to take part.

During the eight-week
training cycle, trainees
stiiidled general military

epidemic and on-the-Job
training In one of the
Navy’s 80 basic occupa
tional fields.
Included In their studies
were seamanship, close
order drill. Naval history
and first aid. Personnel
who complete this course
of Instruction are eligible
for three hours of college
credit In Physical Educa
tion and Hygiene.
A1870 graduate of Kings
Mountain Senior High
School, he Joined the Navy
in January 1878.

Pre-school screening for
students entering classes

for April, according to
Howard Bryant, director
of Instruction.
’Ihe dates gnd schools
are as follows: Bethware,
Tluirs., Apr. 18; Orover,
Mon., Apr. 17; East, Wed.,
Apr. 18; West, Thurs., Apr.
90; and Nordi, Mon., Apr.
94.
Three sesalans per day
at each school have been
set from 8-10:80 a. m.,
10:80 a. m.-noon; and 1-
9:30 p. m.

Bryant said, "All
children who will enter
school for the first time are
expected to attend with
their parents one of the
sessions listed above. In
addition to the forms for
registering the child, the
school must have a copy of
the child’s birth certificate
(not the hospital record),
hk ‘shot’ record, and a
copy of the physical
examination by the family
doctor or the health
department."
During the screening
session parents will par
ticipate In an orientation
progrsun and conferences
with the social worker and
principal. Some 860
children are expected to
participate In the
screening.
Bryant said children who
will be live years old on or
before Oct 16,1878, will be
eligible to enter kinder
garten; those who will be
sbc years old on or before
Oct. 16, 1878 wUl be
eligible for kindergarten or
the first grade.

named plant manager of
the Phenlx plant here, a
unit of Burlington Sports
wear Fabrics.

Weldon succeeds Nell

A native of Henderson,
Weldon received his
bachelor’s degree from
North Carolina State
University. He Joined
Burlington shortly after
graduating in 1868.
Weldon has held
manufacturing positions at
several company loca
tions, and most recently
served as plant manager
at Burlington’s Mayflower
plant In Cramerton.
His wife Is the former
Joyce Raynor of Hender
son. They have three
children.
