Fact la, this could be the greatest challenge of all for the red-fezzed humanitarians since they’re reverting from Friday to Wednesday night promotion. Reason Is competition became so heavy for ‘name’ shorttrack jocks In view of the number of tracks operating In the Orollnas on the weekend. So, with this In mind, the Oaston County Shrine Club decided to switch to a Wednesday night. This year, the date Is May 17 and, again, will be held at the four-tenths-mlle Oaston Speedway, located south of Gastonia on Union Road. ’’We’ve got a real challenge, no doubt about It,’’ said Boyce Hunt, general race chairman, "but that word Isn’t exactly a stranger to us. We had It ter 16 years with qionsorshlp of the NCAA DIetrIct 3 baseball tour nament and now we're In our sixth year of racing. Somehow, things work out.” In some 22 years, the Gaston County ^rine Club has raised more than $126,000 for Shrine Charities, most of It ear marked for the Greenville, S. C., Unit of the Shrlners Hospital for Crippled Children. "All one needs to do to see why we put so much emphasis on money raising Is to visit that hospital," says Hunt. "It tells the story much better than I ever could." As for the upcoming race, less than a month away, Mike Duvall of Gaffney, S. C., Is expected In the field again to defend his 1C'77 title. As a matter of fact, the 28-year-old Sandlapper has a monopoly working. He’s won the last three Shrine lOOs. Also, Shrlners are tepeful that BUly Scott of Union, S. C., and Stick Elliott, a hell • bent-for- leather type of cam paigner, the other two winners, will join Duvall In the May 17th lineup at Oaston Speedway. There'll be no change In the total puree evallable. FYom 86,000 total awarde, the winner of the feature will get 11,200. Also, a handsome trophy goes to the driver in victory lane.
