JT What doea Paris, France have in common with Southfield, Michigan and Washington, D. C.? Who are the gabbiest people on earth? The answers to these "profound questions and other phone facta are contained In the 1977 edition of "The World’s Telephones”. T. M. Qraham, Southern Bell’s district manager here In Oastonla, ex plained that '“The World’s ’Telephones” Is an annual digest of telephone In formation and statistics compiled by AT&T from data obtained from over 220 different countries and territories throughout the world. It takes a whole year to sift through the mountain of data received, said Qraham; therefore, the figures contained In the current edition are as of January 1, 1977. For those readers who are eagerly awaiting answers to the above questions, Paris Joins Southfield; Washington; Stockholm; Sweden, San Francisco,; Fullerton, Oallf.; Zurich, Swltxerland and Newport Beach, Calif.; In a select group of metropolitan areas that have more telephones than people. Oiu' nation’s capital Is the front-runner with 146.8 telephones for every 100 residents. Right behind Washington su'e Southfield, Michigan, a Detroit suburb, with 141.0 and Stockholm, Sweden, with U4.9. 'Two other U. S. cities, Evanston and l^rlngfleld, Illinois, Just barely missed this ex clusive group in 1976. If you haven’t already guessed by now, the gabbiest people In the world are right here In the USA. Americans had over 166 million telephones and placed more than 210 billion calls In 1976 — the centennial year of the Invention of the telephone. France and Sweden were distant runners-up with S3 billion and 18 billion conversations respec tively. In terms of total telephones, Japan was second to the U. S. with 48.4 million telephones. The united Kingdom was third with 22 million. Graham said that North Carolinians certainly did their share In making the U. S. Number 1 in telephone usage, customers, both Southern Bell and those served by the Independent telephone companies in North Carolina made almost 4 billion calls from the 3,441,606 telephones In service as of January 1, 1977. ’This amounts to two per cent of the country’s conversations and telephones. These statistics, said Graham, placed North Carolina’s telephone usage ahead of such countries as Austria, Denmark, India, and Mexico. Graham added that seven North Carolina cities were Included In the statistics this year. Charlotte Is by far the largest city In terms of total telephones with 332,442. However, In terms of telephones per 100 residents, Greensboro claims the number one spot with 86.7. Other cities Included were Asheville, Durham, High Point, Raleigh, and Winston- Salem. Lady Godiva made her fa mous bare-skinned ride through the streets to protest an oppressive tax imposed on the people by her husband, Earl Leofric.
