Dixon Congregation Surprises Dr. Whitener Dixon Presbyterian Church surprised their pastor, Dr. OUn Whitener, at an "Appreciation Night" supper Saturday night at the church. Dr. Whitener had been' Invited by the Women of the Church to show a film on the annual Birthday Offering for the program. After the serving of supper In the Fellowship Hall, the congregation assembled In the sanctuary to "roast” the minister and present him with tokeiu of their appreciation In the form of a handsome clock and golfing equipment. For months the congregation, under the direction of Gary Stewsu*! and Glenn Rountree, had planned the event and Invited Dr. Whltener’s mother, Mrs. Olln Whitener, Sr. and other members of his family, to share In the festivities. Ruth Ann (Mrs. Olln Whitener, Jr.) had been alerted but the event was a big surprise to Dr. Whitener, who has served Lib Stewart W Iw! the Dixon church, and Shiloh congregation of Grover, for two years. Members participating ,ln the "roasting” were Gary Stewart, weho was master of ceremonies; Glenn Rountree; Bud Stewart; Thomsis Hum phries; Mrs. David Hughes; Mrs. Wayne Wells, Mrs. J. E. Childers, and Jackie Hughes. Dr. Whitener took some good-natured "ribbing" about his golf game and fishing, along with some "gag” prizes In the forms of fishing bait, golf balls, a small car and can of gasoline. His three sons, Benjamin, Trip and Jason, quickly took the cars for their own. "Now It all fits In,” exclaimed the surprised minister, who said his mother, brother, sisters and their families su'rlved In Grover Just In time to drive to the Dixon Com munity for the 6 p. m. supper.
