June 1, 1978-MIRROR.HERALD-Page 8A Chuck Gordon, who had already won seven trophies this year for his accomplishments on the wrestling mat, added three more to his collection Tuesday night at the Kings Mountain High School All- %>orts Banquet. The 346-pound senior copped the first annual Mirror-Herald Athlete of Ihe Year Award, the most valuable wrestler trophy and shared the Fred Plonk Blocking Trophy In foot ball. The selection of Gordon came as no surprise as most of the huge gathering expected him to win the top prizes. An All-Oonference performer In three sports his Junior and senior years, Gordon capped off one of the most brilliant Indivi dual careers In KMHS sports history last winter when he posted a 27-0 record In wrestling and won the state champion ship. Gordon, who recently signed a wrestling grant- in-aid Vtdth Appalachian State, had already been named Wrestler of the Year In North Carolina and most valuable wrestler In the Gaston Tournament and the Western Sectional. He won championship awards In the Gaston Tourney, the Southwestern Sectionals, Reglonals and State. Gordon was given two standing ovations by his teammates and fans, one when he received the MVP award for wrestling and the other when he accepted the Athlete of the Year prize. The only other person to receive a stan ding ovation was the guest weaker, former Clemson University football coach, Frank Howard. Several others received two trophies, including Pat Durham, who won the MVP Award for girls tennis and also the coveted Jan Fryar Memorial Trophy for excellence In girls tennis; Angle Hlck- nian, who copped the MVP trophies for both girls soft- ball and girls track; and Priscilla Rlckenbacker, who won MVP trophies In girls basketball and girls volleyball. Other award winners Included: Golf MVP. Darrell Austin. Boys Tennis MVP, Tim Riddle. Boys Track MVP, Terry McClain. MV Cheerleaders, Tammy Ross and Sharon Foster. Baseball MVP, Tim Leach and Andy Loftln. Girls basketball most Improved, Faye Ramey. Girls basketball coach’s award, Phyllis Mack. Boys basketball most improved, Jeff Prescott. ^ys basketball coach’s award, Vernon Bell. John Gamble Scholastic Award for football, Steve Boggan. Fred Plonk Blocking Trophy, Kelly Land (co winner with Gordon). George Plonk Most Valuable Player In foot ball, Kenny Bell. Mountaineer Defensive Award for football, Bruce Valentine. Most Improved In football, Norman Phillips.
