Page 4A-MIRROR-ilEBAU>-Tlionday, February 8, 19T9 Pats Clinch WC Co-Tide Kings Mountain Junior mgh’B Patriots clinched at least a share of the Western Junior High Athletic Association basketball title Monday when they defeated Bast McDowell TS-36 to run their record to 13-1. Coach Ken Napier’s charges have a one-game lead over College Park of mckory heading Into their final game this afternoon at Shelby. A victory over the Blue Devils would give the Patriots their first Western Association title and their third conference championship In the past four years. The Patriots won back-to-back FoothUls Conference titles In 1076-76 and 1978-77 before Joining the Western group. Kings Mountain got off to a sluggish start Monday, falling behind 16-13 after the first period. But the Patriots heated up in the second quarter and by halftime had the game In hand. 83-22. Tournament In Charlotte seeds are 106 pound Tracy Schlft of South Point, 146 pound Darron Smith of East Gaston and 167 pound Richard Lewis of East Gaston; and number tour seeds Include 183 pound Jeff Baker of East Guton. Action gets tmderway Friday at 13:80 p. m. and semi-finals action gets underway at 3:80 p. m. Saturday. The top four wrestlers In the 110 and 166 pound classes and the top three In all the other classes will advance to the Western Reglonals next Friday and Saturday at Hickory High School. The top eight wrestlers In each division at Hlckoiy will advance to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association tournament February 38- 24 In Winston-Salem. Carl Smith led the KM scoring attack with 16 points, Demetrius Goode added 18 and Thomas Bess 13. Kings Mountain set a school assist record with 44. Tim BeU had nine. Smith and Jimmy Brown seven each, and every other Patriot at least one each. “We stood around on de fense and let them get their offense going on us In the first quarter,” noted Napier. "But we started to press In the second quarter and got some big steals which put us Into an 11- polnt lead at halftime. “After halftime we came out and really used our inesses to our advantage,” he added. “We Intercepted the ball several times and got a good fastbreak going on them.” By the end of the third quarter, the Pats had a commandable 66-28 ad- vanUge. “We had real good offen sive continuity,” he added, pointing to the assist record. "Everybody passed the ball real well. It’s real good to see the Uds want to pass the ball like that. ‘"nie big key for us, though, was our fastbreak In the second half,” he _sald. "We just outran them. We cut off their Inside game and forced them to take the long shot.” The Patriots had their lowest shooting percentage of the year, hitting Just 87 percent from the floor and 46 percent from the foul line. ‘”1110 reason for the low percentages was that everybody got a chance to play,” said Napier. “Our second and third teams played the whole fourth quarter and did a real good job.” The Patriot Jayvees also provided some excitement Monday as their Frank Parker scored a school record 88 points In a 62-84 victory over East Mc- DoweU. The victory gives Coach Danny McDowell’s charges a 8-4 record heading Into today’s finale with Shelby. Bums leads the league with a 10-8 mark. If the Mountles lose to both Oest and South Point, they would drop to sixth place and would have to win the SWC tourney to qualify for the dlatrlct event. The SWC teams will Join the top three clubs from the Western Piedmont Conference In the district field. The site has not yet been announced but since the district tourney was held at Bums last year.
