The Patriots, who were 10-0 and won their second straight conference title, In clude, from row, left to right, Mike Smith, Roger McClain, Todd Cloninger, Doug Caldwell and John Fleming. Second row. Games will be played at 6, 7, 8 and 9 p.m. Thursday featuring teacher teams and local civic clubs and Industrial leagues. Two civic clubs — Kiwanls and Jaycees — will Upoff the action at 6 p.m. At 7, the Central teachers face the Rotary dub, at 8, the junior high teachers meet the Police Department, and at 9, the high school teachers battle Foote Mineral. Tickets are two dollars Ibr all three nights or one dollar at the gate. Proceeds will go to scholarships for deserving senior students and a workshop for parents on "Development of the ProducUve ChUd.” and Jack Kohl, will not get a chance to see his pole vaulters and jiunpers In action until the first meet. The track at John Gamble Stadium s presently under repairs and the lack of facilities could hurt the Mountles early In the year. The Mountaineers have two home meets scheduled In April, Including the annual Cleveland County meet. If the KM track la not ready, the county meet will be moved to Shelby and KMHS wlU host the event next year. The Mountaineers return one of their best all round athletes from a year ago, hurdler Terry Mc Clain. He should rank among the best In the SWC. KMHS wUl be strong In the sprints, paced by sophomore Sylvester Hamrick and junior Kevin Mack. They are two of the fastest runners In the SWC. Sammy Bell, a senior coming off an outstanding wrestling season, has looked good Int he mile and relays and should prove to be one of the top point producers fro the Moun taineers. The Mountaineers lost most of their discus throwers, and shot putters. Including Athlete of the Year Chuck Gordon, but several good prospects are on hand. Including Gleim Carroll, Darryl Brown, Henry Hager and Kale Goins. KMHS Netters Defeat Hussj Host Lincolnton Kings Mountain Highs tennis team broke Into the victory column Tuesday afternoon at Phillips Center In Gastonia with a 6-8 non-conference victory over Hunter Huss. The Mountaineers are 1- 1 heading Into their first home match Friday against Llncolnton’s Wolves. Kings Mountain cap tured all three doubles matches after the two teams spUt the six singles events. Kings Mountain also won a practice doubles match In which Bany Webster and Greg Hambright of the Moun taineers won a 7-5, 6-7, 6-0 victory over Whitesides and Hager. "We played a fairly good match," commented Coach Ed Guy, but we still need two or three more weeks of hard work before we reach our peak. I though Huss was on par with Freedom, which beat us 0-4 In our first match. The only difference was this time we played weU enough to win. "I was a little bit disappointed with the bottom part of our lineup," he continued. "They could be playing much better. Photo By Richard Hamrick Ron Rowell Most Valuable Ron Rowell won the most valuable wrestler award at a banquet honoring the undefeated Kings Mountain Junior High wrestlers Thursday at CktUetown U.S.A. Rowell, a 106-pounder, recorded 10 straight pins and scored 60 points to help lead the Patriots to their second straight Western Junior High Athletic Association championship. Tommy Welch, an eighth grader who also posted a perfect 10-0 record, won the most Improved wrestler award. Outstanding wrestler awards went to Tim Hamrick, Todd Cloninger, Roger McClain, Mike Smith, Eric Spicer, Jimmy Wadklns, Walter Goode, Robbie Ervin, David Parker, Todd Bell and Ckrloa Owens. After only two ntatches, we have only one undefeated singles player (Barron Wilson), so It’s obvious that everybody needs to work harder on con centration and executloln of their shots.
