P«ge 8B—MIRROR'HERALD—Thursday, April 12, 1979 Program HARVEST FRESH Reduces Crime The Cleveland County Farm Bureau haa Initiated a property protection service designed to reduce fbe incidence of rural ^me. According to Walter I>avis, president of the farm organization, the program is part of a state and national effort in which participants are urged to mark all farm equipment and similar items which, if stolen, would probably travel interstete. Household and personal items may also be marked. ' Davis said the program is a cooperative effort involving Farm Bureau, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the N.C. Sheriffs’ Association, Farm Equipment Dealers 'Association, N.C. Department of Crime Control and Public Safety, N.C. Department of Justice, N.C. Crime Prevention Officers Organization, N.C. Agricultural Extension Service, and the N.C. Department of Agriculture. The new system uses an individual identification number which is composed (rf 10 characters. It teUs the state and county of residence and other in formation that can be used in tracing ownership. Davis has appointed a committee of Farm ^ Bureau Directors com posed of Dale Blanton, {Chairman; Jack Seism, Edwin Dalton and Henry Dameron, County Ex tension Chairman to coordinate the program in Cleveland County. According to Dale Blanton the identification number is obtained by contacting the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office, Commyipicatipn Center, telepnone' 482-4422. Calls should be made during working hours 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Blanton said, “The first step is for the farmer to receive his identification number from the com munications center. Then he should secure one of the pieces of marking equipment which will be at the County Extension Office, Burns Vo Ag. Department, and Crest Vo- Ag. Department. The coding system enables law enforcement officials anywhere in the United States to in-ove theft and to trace stolen items back to their rightful owner.’’ Henry Dameron, County Extension Chairman, commenting on this iH-ogram said, “The simple but effective coding system has potential of reversi^ rise in rural crimes in our county, state and the nation. Farmers are encouraged to par ticipate in tius program. Ihe identification number will include NC which represents North Carolina, 023, which is the code for Cleveland County and four digits for the farmers number plus the letter representing his last name.’’ Dameron said that should this piece of equipment be stolen and taken to anywhere in the United States, law en forcement officers could look at the number NC0230001D and quickly recognize it to be from North Carolina, Cleveland County, and the farmer was the first farmer registered with the letter D. The Cleveland County Sheriff’s office would be notified and the Mice in turn would get in touch with the farmer. Farmers needing more information about his program may contact members of the Farm Bureau Board of Directors, Dale Blanton and his committee, or the County Extension Office.
