Page 6A—MIRROR-HERALD—Thursday, April 12. 1979 Lead Western Loop Patriots Win Sixth Straight Kings Mountain Junior High’s Patriots will have a Happy Easter vacation after defeating West McDowell 15-5 Monday for their sixth straight Western Junior High Athletic Association baseball win. The victory leaves the Patriots of Coach Porter Griggs alone in first place, llie KM team holds a full game lead over county rival Shelby, which is 5-1. Those teams square off in the first game after the holidays on Thursday night, April 19. The Patriots had their best hitting game of the year Monday, collecting 15 hits off a pair of West McDowell hurlers. Every KM starter had at least one hit. Terry Bullocks con tinued his hot hitting pace for the Pats, going 3-for-4 Carolina A’s Fastpitch Team Opens Saturday The Carolina A’s fast- pitch softball team opens its 1979 season Saturday night at City Stadium against Spartanburg. The A’s, formerly the Shelby Comets, are defending state champions and will be playing all of their home games in Kings Mountain. The team is coached by Freddie Barrett and sponsored by Bob Southwell. Gerald Herndon, both former baseball players at Kings Mountain High School. Scott Ellis, another former KMHS standout, will catch for the A’s. Also on the roster are Phil Roark and Wayne Appling, both of Grover. with three runs batted in. Kevin Jones was 2-for-4 with three runs batted in and Randy Moss was also 2-for-4. Jones and Roy Mathis teamed up for the pitching win, combining for a six- hitter. West McDowell grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first inning but the Patriots scored in every inning beginning with the second. They struck for four runs and a 4-1 lead in the second. The uprising was keyed bv Bullocks’ double and singles by Jones,Jeff Moss and Scott Shaw. A double by Mathis and singles by Bullocks and Jones led to three more runs and a 7-1 lead in the third. Edward Austin’s double, a single by Randy Moss and Bullocks’ second double keyed a three-run rally in the fourth which hiked the margin to 10-1. KM added two more in the fifth on a walk to Eric Spicer and singles by Brent Bell and Randy Moss, and the Patriots closed out the scoring in the sixth with three runs on singles by David Turner, Kenny Mitchem and a double by Jamie Green. Saturday’s doubleheader will begin at 7:30 p.m. Several players well known to Kings Mountain area fans will be in the lineup, including All-State infielders Tony Leigh and The A’s will play in weekend tournaments all over the South and will host at least one tour nament at City Stadium. Hie first local tourney will be played May 5-6. Next weekend, the A’s travel to Columbia, S.C., to compete in the Ft. Jackson tournament. Golfers Second Again, Go To Chase Today Kings Mountain High’s golfers posted their third straight second place finish in Southwestern 3-A Conference golf action Hiursday at Burns. East Gaston’s Warriors won the match with a 311, followed by Kings Mountain 318, Burns 327 and Crest 348. David Jones of East Gaston was individual medalist with a one-over par 73. Joyce Hawley of the Warriors was second with 74 and Darrel Austin of the Mountaineers third with a 76. Other KMHS scores included Delk Haigler 78, Darrell Forbes 78, Sammy Wolfe 85, Herbie Beam 86 and Dexter Tate 88. The Mountaineers go to Chase this Thursday to meet the Trojans, Bums and R-S Central. KMHS will compete in the Cleveland County Tour nament at Riverbend on April 19. Only a limited lumber of openings are available, college officials said, and applicants will be accepted on a "flrst-come- flrst-serve” basis. The boys' basketbail camp is scheduled for 9 a.m.-4:30p.m., June 11-16, and will be directed by Lenolr-Rhyne coach Nell Hodges. Girls’ basketball is slated for the seune hours, June 18-22, with Coach Pat Smith direc ting: and football, the same hours, June 26-29, Coach Jack Huss direc ting. The gymnastics camp is open to youngsters 9-18 years old, and they may choose morning sessions from 9:30-11 a.m. or af ternoon sessions from 1- 2:30 p.m., July 16-20.
