Package Found In Car
Bomb Investigation
Continues At School
US'
i
An investigation into who placed a
homemade bomb beneath the front
|r.%at of Mr. and Mrs. Keith (Bud)
Bumgardner’s car last Wednesday
is continuing.
Police Chief J.D. Barrett said “an
unidentified caller phoned police
headquarters about 9:42 a.m. last
Wednesday to say the explosive
device had been placed in the
Bumgardner’s vehicle in the Kings
Mountain Senior High parking lot.”
Hie small, brown paper-wrapped
device was discovered about 10 a.m.
by KMP Sgt. L.E. Beattie. On hand
to assist were Lts Bobby Phillips
and Tommy Goodson of Gaston
County Police, and SBI District
Evidence Agent Bill Lane.
Lane was in Gastonia working on
the recent discovery of a homemade
explosive device at the rear of
Gaston County Sheriff E.L.
Waldrep’s home. Lane took the
contents of the package found in the
Bumgardner’s car to Raleigh last
Thursday for examination.
“The package was not connected
to anything inside the car,” Chief
Barrett said. “The SBI lab in
Raleigh was to examine the contents
of the package thoroughly and
determine how the bomb was to be
exploded.”
Chief Barrett said both Bud
Bumgardner and his wife, Sandra,
were questioned following the in
cident. Bud teaches vocational
education and his wife is bookkeeper
at the senior high. Barrett said
neither of them had any idea why
anyone would plant an ex[dosive
device in their car.
The Mirror-Herald has learned,
however, that Mrs. Bumgardner
reportedly has received several
I^ione calls from an unidentified
caller “suggesting she give up her
job at the school.”
