PaKo fi—MIRROR-IIRRAI.D—Tuesday, April 24. 1979 Patriots Stay Host South Point Tonight In Loop Lead Moimties Can Clinch Playoff Berth Jeff Moss's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Kings Mountain Junior High’s baseballers a hard-earned ft-7 victory over Shelby Thursday afternoon at Lancaster Field. The victory kept Coach Porter Griggs’ Patriots undefeated in the Western Junior High Athletic Association with a 7-0 record. Shelby fell to 5-2. Shelby jumped out front 7-2 after two and one-half innings of play but the Patriots battled back behind some timely hitting and improved defense. KMHS Golfers Finish Second Kings Mountain High’s golfers finished second to Shelby in the first annual Cleveland County Golf Tournament played Thursday at Riverbend Golf Course near Shelby. The Golden Lions scored 316 to 321 for Kings Mountain, 345 for Crest and 357 for Burns. David Cash of Shelby took medalist honors with a 75 and KM’s Darrell Austin was runner-up with 77. Other KM scores in cluded Herbie Beam 79, ■Sammy Wolfe 82, Darrell Forbes 83, Delk Haigler 85 and David Rhea 93. Junior Hif^ Girls Beaten Kings Mountain Junior High’s girls softball team dropped its third straight game Thursday at Shelby 17-7. Melinda Roberts led the Lady Pat) lots at h.it with a home run. KM travels to Burns Diursday. A KM error aided a two- run rally in the second which gave Shelby a 3-0 edge and three more errors helped the Blue Devils score four more in the top of the third for a 7-2 lead. Kings Mountain played errorless ball after that. Lefthander Kevin Jones came in to pitch in the top of the fourth inning and gave up just one hit the rest of the way. He walked only two and struck out six. A single by Terry Bullock, double by Jones and a single by Moss put two runs across in the second as KM cut Shelby’s lead to 3-2. KM added two more in the bottom of the third on Bullock’s two-run homer to make it 7-4. KM scored a singleton in the fourth on a double by Moss and Eric Spicer’s single, then tied it in the fifth with two runs on a walk to Roy Mathis, single by Bullock and Moss’s double. In the winning seventh, Mathis struck out but made it to first when the third strike got away from the Shelby catcher. Bullock singled and both men moved up on a throwing error. Jones was walked intentionally to load the bases. Mark Champion, running for Mathis at third, scored on Moss’s sacrifice fly. Bullock finished with 4- for-4 to lead the KM plate attack and Moss added 3- for-3 and four runs batted in. The Patriots, who were scheduled to play at East McDowell yesterday, return home Thursday to host Bums in a 7 p.m. contest. Kings Mountain High’s baseballers can clinch a berth in the Southwestern 3-A Conference playoffs tonight if they defeat South Point in their Eastern Division contest at Lan caster Field. Yankee pitcher Harold Stowe. The Mountaineers carry a 7-4 division record and 9- 4 overall mark into the contest and hold a one- game edge over South Point (6-5 and 7-6) in the race tor second place. The Mountaineers, should they defeat South Point tonight, could then end up in a tie for first place with East Gaston if they defeat the Warriors (8-3) in the regular season finale here Friday night. SWC playoff action begins on Tues^y of next week with the top two clubs from the East meeting the top two from the West in best- of-three sets. Kings Mountain built up a 4-0 lead after three and one-half innings but the Charges came back with two runs in the fourth and sixth frames to tie it and force the extra innings. Proctor wo ked himself out of several jams before finally giving way to Leach with two away in the sixth. Oest left the bases loaded in the first and had two men stranded in the second. KMHS Coach Barry Gibson will send the SWC’s winningest pitcher Tim Leach (7-1) to the mound in an attempt to nail down a playoff berth. South Point will probably go with lefthander Rudy Stowe, son of former New York Kings Mountain kept its one-game edge over South Point Friday by stopping Oest 7-4 in a nine-inning game on the Charger diamond. Leach came on in the sixth inning in relief of Ricky Proctor to pick up the victory. Danny Bolin’s home run over the right-centefield fence gave the Mounties a 1-0 edge in the second Jim Chapman walked and moved around on wild pitches to make it 2-0 in the third, and the Mounties got a pair in the fourth on Lyn Hayes’ double, a walk to Bryon White and a costly Oest error. BOXSCORE KMHS Netters Win Two In SW Kings Mountain High’s ’tennis team won a pair of Southwestern Conference matches last week to bring their league record to 3-1 and overall mark to 8-4.
